Why do girls wiggle their butts when they pull up their pants?

Asked by Anonymous523 (214points) November 13th, 2008

I’ve seen lots of girls who will stand up to pull up their pants after sitting down or something and they will shake or wiggle their behinds while they pull up their pants? Why do they do this?

To get deeper into the pants. I usually jump. That way you don’t have to pull them up against nearly so soon.

I know! I hate when girls put their pants back on.

Who cares as long as they keep doing it?

Nimis is right, it’s about the hips. I’m partial to the jump, wiggle, lay down on the bed and kick my legs up in the air move.

Then again, I tend toward the dramatic . . .

Figbash: When I do that, I consider it tending towards the lazy. (No, really, it’s the option for getting dressing without getting out of bed)

Today’s reason I’m thankful to be a man: my pants go on easily and fit comfortably.

At least women don’t have a zipper in the way.

Figbash and/or Empress: You say you jump to pull your pants back up, is this something you will do even in public or in that case do you become more partial to the wiggle or other method of pulling your pants back up?

EmpressPixie's avatar

In public! I’m not shy about it at all! If my pants are riding low, you can see my panties which I am utterly shy about. TMI: a lot of my friends have given me really flashy underwear over the years as pranks and if it’s low-laundry season or whatever and I happen to be wearing some of that, I’d really rather not let Joe-behind-me think I’m into sequined thongs or whatever.

Edited to add: I actually never wear the sequined thong, but you get the idea.

I like this discussion….

Empress: I would have thought you’d be kinda self conscious of what people would think about you jumping to pull up your pants, but I guess it’s always good to not want to let your underwear be showing

EmpressPixie's avatar

Nope, I’d rather hide my undies than care what people think about the jump. It’s a small jump, they probably won’t notice, and I’m not too chubby.

I know I wiggle into jeans. On the bed, doing a bicycle kick wiggleing in like a worm. I do the jump but mostly wiggle. Except for my fave dress slacks with pant leg liner…those glide on.

@Anonymous: Oh, in public it’s the – thumbs-in-the-beltloops, hoist, one or two wiggles and then shimmy. I like to be subtle.

The science is this; in general, women’s waists are approximately 10 smaller than their hips. (That does not include the new generation of snake-hipped teen-agers; I don’t know where they came from.)

I also put my fingers through my belt loops, tug up and do a little wiggle at the same time. Especially when I’d go to the movies with my ex because he always insisted sitting close to the front of the theater. I’m not about to stand up right as the lights come up at the end of the movie, in a huge room full of people, while my underwear are showing. Especially because I do tend to wear thongs. I like them, but that doesn’t mean I want everyone else to know I wear them. (Besides right now, because it’s relevant to the question, so just shut up already, please!)

But yes, it’s because of hips. If women aren’t rock hard we tend to squish a little bit in that area, while wearing jeans. If they aren’t the absolute perfect fit, which is very hard to find, they’re going to come down a little bit as you sit and stand.

generalspecific's avatar

Bahahaha.
My friend always says she’s “doing the dance to pull up her pants.”

but I agree, belt loops do wonders for the pulling up pantsness. and I try to be subtle, but it’s just so hard sometimes. thankfully, I found some jeans that fit so wonderfully and sit right at my hips, I hardly every have to “do the dance” :)

augustlan's avatar

@general: I wish I could find some pants that fit! I feel like I spend all damn day pulling them back up. (I’ve ripped a few belt loops doing it!) And yes, I wiggle.

Allie's avatar

If I’m putting them on then I do a wiggle move, but if they’re already on and I’m standing up from sitting or something I just pull them up from the waist of the pants.

Anonymous523's avatar

@drastic Wouldn’t you have to stand up to pull up your pants and thus wind up exposing your underwear/thong to anyone behind you at the theater?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

Nope. ‘Cause I start pulling up before I’m completely vertical. That and I also try to wear longer shirts whenever I go to the theater.

Anonymous523's avatar

So you start by pulling straight up and then wiggle/shake your butts once you’re vertical to make sure they’re up or are you wiggling the whole time?

Allie's avatar

Someone just upload a video of “how to” cause some people just aren’t getting it.

Anonymous523's avatar

The one thing I really don’t get is when Fig says she wiggles AND shimmys

DrasticDreamer's avatar

Yeah, I start by pulling straight up just to try and make sure as much of my underwear are covered as possible so the people behind me don’t get a view.

@Allie: That doesn’t sound like such a bad idea. ;)

Anonymous523's avatar

The “how to” video might help

I love this question.

Anonymous523's avatar

1. Why do some girls wiggle their butts faster/more than some girls who pull their pants up as more of a dance?
2. What is the difference between wiggling your butt and “shimmying” your butt when you pull up your pants?

Nimis's avatar

The wiggle moves mostly along the x-axis…with some motion along the z-axis.
Whereas the shimmy utilizes all three axes…with an emphasis on the y-axis.

generalspecific's avatar

The wiggle speed really depends how how tight the pants are. Faster wiggles are usually tighter pants that you’re trying to squeeze your hips into.

Anonymous523's avatar

Arent wiggling your butt and shimmying your butt the same? If not then may a video would fix my confusion haha.

kissmesoftly's avatar

Because the pants have slipped, and unlike some men, we wear our pants above our hips and ass.
