How do you get to sleep when you have insomnia?

Asked by suse (278points) November 13th, 2008

I work some very late shifts, almost night shifts (as late as 4am finish) and so my sleep pattern is disrupted . cant go to bed same time each day. I go through stages where i sleep great, but other times get very tired but cant sleep or wake up after only a couple of hours still tired :(
Tried hot milk, reading, tv etc.
dont want heavy duty sleeping pills but is there anything over the counter that helps? some of the herbal ones made me feel weird when I took them, someone told me tylenol pm – but would this be ok every day before bed??

Embrace your insomnia…use your extra time to do more stuff. You’ll either be so much more productive than everyone else, or you’ll do so much that your body will be forced to sleep haha

Once I start my deep yawning, I strap on my CPAP mask and most of the time I sleep right through. Before CPAP I was up all hours. I think I’m having a dejavu. Weird!

I don’t. As a lifelong insomniac, I’ve just grown used to it.

Well if you want to know about CPAP you’d do well to check it out on Google.

Seroquel 300 milligrams at bedtime .

looked up cpap mask and as far as I can see, they are for sleep apnea not insomnia…...... and quite expensive :(
I will try the seroquel first, see – here i still am at nearly 3 am and only got 4 hours sleep last night. midway thr the day I was determined to go to bed before midnight!

I think about the fact that this guy and his gang will be gone soon.

Many people with insomnia also have undiagnosed Apnea.
