Do people get the hiccups in their sleep?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12574points) November 17th, 2008

I know most of us sneeze in our sleep, and certainly cough. Can a person get the hiccups while asleep? Have you?

You sneeze in your sleep? I wake up if I have to sleep. I’ve fallen asleep with the hiccups… I don’t know if they stayed.

between the two threads i count 5 other people who sneeze in their sleep….

(i don’t think i could possibly fall asleep if i had the hiccups; it doesn’t keep jolting you awake?)

you know, i really don’t know anything about the sneezing bit. i know 5 ppl do, that’s not “most” of anything…please, everyone just disregard the whole sneezing thing. what am i talking about what i “know”? i don’t “know” anything!

yeah, the question is: do you get the hiccups in your sleep?
(and now i’m wondering if you can fall asleep with the hiccups! i didn’t realize other people could! please share any hiccup/sleep stories!)

Well, I don’t know about humans, but I have seen my dog hiccup while he was asleep.

He kinda wiggle-jolts, settles back down, then does it again in a minute or so. It’s very cute.

I get hiccups after I eat or drink. Just a mouthful can set me off. And sometimes I just start. I’d say I get the hiccups almost every single day. I don’t mind them I think thy’re funny, and apparently mine are endearing – or so I’ve been told.

But I have totally gotten them in my sleep. It resembles Katawa’s dog.

I feel like if I were to hiccup while sleeping it’d wake me up. . .would it still count at that point?

your guess is as good as mine…

Last night I was awoken out of a sound sleep buy a dream that I was having the hiccups. It was not fun because it was real, yes hiccups woke me up this morning. I also get the hiccups when I eat standing up. So yes, people can get hiccups in their sleep. This was my first time and I must say I would prefer it to be my last.
