Asked by Magnus (2884points) November 19th, 2008

This is the problem of the week in my math class.
How many rectangles are there in this figure: http://tinyurl.com/5oeubn ?

Don’t count the lines, and disregard the ugly corners.

I got to 39… what do you get to?

This may sound like you’re trying to get people to do homework for you. You might want to rephrase the question.

You’re missing 2x big square plus two small on top. then you got 39.

Rectangles are not squares.
18 rectangles.

Yes, not all rectangles are squares.
But all squares are rectangles, no?

rect-angle = has 90 degree angles inside.

back to school!

@jvgr A square is a type of rectangle. As tigran mentioned, a rectangle is any shape that has four sides and every angle is 90 degrees. If the question had been “how many squares” then the answer would change, but since it is asking for rectangles, squares are included.
