What are some instant ways to cheer myself up?

Asked by clairedete (331points) November 19th, 2008

Anything cheap & easy. Just something that will take my mind off of everything for a while, maybe a day or two.

Rent a cat. Get a scratching post. Sprinkle some cat nip on the post; have an hysterical laughing fit.

Buy your own cat.

At times like this I turn to my camera. I force myself to take pictures outside. The walk always helps, and viewing the world through the viewfinder helps take my mind away.

I just noticed you live in Minnesota. A fix for that requires more research. The shorter days and the cold would depress anyone. Can you find someone who needs a little help or support; sometimes thinking of others reminds you that life is not so bad.

If you want some instant gratification, there’s always Lolcats.

I just went for a walk and it lifted my mood. The other night I went to a movie by myself and totally escaped for a couple of hours. If that doesn’t work, check this out.

Hot chocolate with whipped cream and a Jane Austen novel?

go to a movie or buy payperview. its a good distraction and the drama in the film will distract you of the drama in your life.

Save some money, go to a library and borrow a really old movie. It might be so old as to be awfully bad, then you can laugh at it and feel better.

Any of these ideas are good. Personally, I like to go and play my piano. Just something about the music I play and knowing that it doesn’t matter how it sounds. I also like to have a tickle fight with my kids.

mine’s the best hehe

Music and movies are always good. But where in Minnesota are you? I’m in the Twin Cities and I’ve lived in both NW and NE Minnesota, so I can probably suggest something to do. And if that fails, try some illegal drugs ;)

clairedete's avatar

@dale: I’m currently in Chicago for school but I’m going home in less than 36 hours! I live in Roseville.

dalepetrie's avatar

Ah, Chicago…my home away from home. And Roseville, very close to me, I’m in Como Park in St. Paul, so Roseville is where I shop, go out to eat, etc.

If I were in Chicago right now, I’d get myself a pizza at Giordano’s. Spend a few hours at the Field Museum and hit a show at Second City…that ought to get you through the next 36 hours.

clairedete's avatar

Finals shall also get me through that time. ahhh a vicious circle.

And if all else fails, watch this….

fireside's avatar

roflmfao, that is one sad video

dalepetrie's avatar

I’ll bet it cheered YOU up, fireside! At first I was like…so what, she’s not that bad. But then it all just went to hell.

fireside's avatar

wow, i had to watch that again and am dying laughing.
I thought the bad part was when she was on the ground the first time and was trying to figure out the point of the video when BAM.

augustlan's avatar

Brilliant, Dale!

delirium's avatar

Masturbation.

Crass, but true.

Judi's avatar

I always fall for it don’t I. Uggg!!!!!!!

Comedian's avatar

What?!?! NO IT’S NOT!!!

Toledo Surprise means you “Chop the nuts, pound the dough, back it up, nice and slow. Then you got a Toledo Surprise.” It’s from The Drowsy Chaperone.

fireside's avatar

lol, ok you made it sound even dirtier

here’s a video

Comedian's avatar

This is what the song means. There are two gansters posing as pastry chefs and they are saying what they are going to do to a guy.

Those are the original people. The singer starting out is Georgia Engell. She plays Mrs. Tottendale

maybe_KB's avatar

Heck-Yea
I’ll come back when i’m done cheering my self up

TitsMcGhee's avatar

Despite the answers above, I actually was going to say masturbation…

delirium's avatar

Tits, look up. You’re not alone. ;)

Hence the “despite the answers above”... Always works for me, anyway :)
