What do you recommend for a skin burn?

Asked by rossi_bear (753points) November 20th, 2008

I was loading the wood stove and burned my forearm on the handle. I went to the hospital and they said just ointment and a dressing. is there anything else i can do to stop ths stinging? it is a second degree burn.

I’ve always used aloe for this. My neighbor has a plant that I will just break off a (leaf?) plantlike appendage, split it open and then rub the soft wet plant innards on the burned area.

Aloe is great for burns.

Personally, I will just sit with a bag of ice covered in a damp towel on my burn if it’s bad. I’ve never had one I had to go to the hospital for, and I don’t know what a doctor would say about it, but it’s the only thing that ever seems to make my burn feel better.

my dr was closed today. that is why they said to go to the hospital. he goes to nursing homes on thursdays. and thank you for your answers. we have the ice but i am going to go get some aloe. i don’t have that here. and the burn goes the down my whole are. the blister is big and filled right now. and stinks bad. that is a big help! thanks again

If its a second degree burn do not put any ointments on it (unless it is one specifically given to you by the doctor for that purpose such as an antibiotic cream), the best treatment is to cover it with a sterile (if possible) non fluffy dressing but be carefull not to put any sticky tape on the burn itself.

Ice or ice water is ussullay not recomended as the ice can damage further the already damaged tissue. Cold water from the tap or a cold compress can lessen the pain.

Try not to break the blisters. If the blisters break, the exposed skin can become infected.

If the blister does break do not run water over the burn just apply the sterile dressing. And go to the doctor and see if you should have some antibiotics to prevent the area getting infected.

@lightlyseared, thank you very much. the ice was making it worse. and the blister is getting bigger. so thank you for telling me about that. and i will be sure to go to the dr is it breaks. which by the size of it now it looks about to burst.

ask your dr about vitamin e because when I burned my arm when I was little they put that on their and I think it helped with healing and preventing a scar.

and I agree with aloe too, but only if your dr says ok

ok, i know this may sound weird and somewhat funny, but it works. i put toothpaste on my burn. it reverses the feeling of hot as in heat from the burnt area and leaves you with another hot feeling but as in minty-cool (hope i’m not confusing you here..lol..).

rossi, I use to run 2 huge ovens in a very hot kitchen. You can imagine that I got so many burns that my arms looked like I had tiger stripe tattoos.

Aloe is still the best soothing/anti-scaring agent that I can suggest but there are a couple of different tips I didn’t include in my earlier answer:
1. Run luke-warm water on the burn right after it happens. I wouldn’t put cold water on it because (like mentioned above), it can be damaging. All you are trying to do is to get the burned area back to room temperature so room temperature water is fine. Since it’s a couple of days later, you can’t exactly follow this one.
2. If you don’t want your blisters to break open, you can put a protective layer of superglue on them. We use to always keep a superglue tube in the medicine cabinet. It’s great for closing up small gashes or making a protective coating on top of burn blisters.

thanks bodyhead. i have never hear of that before, but it seems like it is worth a try. i really don’t want this blister to pop. it covers my whole forearm. i did have sloves on but the gloves are to big for me. they are my hubbys. and they slid down my hand and that is how i got burned. the handle sticks out and of course i was the one to get it. thank you all for your help!! bless you all!!

that’s what superglue was invented for.
