Has anyone ever experienced a quarter-sized sphere of light phenomenon?

Asked by toyhyena (305points) November 25th, 2008

I had trouble falling to sleep tonight, and when I looked over the side of the bed (it was like 5am) there was this little green point of light, about as vibrant (but bigger) than a laser point. And it was green colored and left a small trail as it moved. Staring at it, going through a checklist of what it could possibly be (so that I could dismiss it and go back to sleep), I realized that no, the router and cellphones didn’t look like that in the dark, and it was too concentrated to be a reflection… I continued to stare at it as I turn on the light, and it’s gone.

Since it weirded me out, I brought it up with the only friend awake right now, and he mentioned he had a similar story with a gold-whiteish light when he was leaning back at his computer one day. His lights were on, but there was this little ball of light. It went from his drapes, across the ceiling, and into his closet real quick. He opened his closet, and there was just this little sphere, quarter-sized, and he froze because he was scared. Then it just disappeared (similar to mine).

Does anyone else have a similar story? Any insight? I’m pursuing this a bit ‘cause I remember waking up to a red one years ago in the middle of my window. Seeing it just once, it’s definitely easier to dismiss and go right back to sleep. Second time just has me worried.

Not that this will freak you out less (and I’m not saying I believe in this either), but it sounds like you have Orbs.

What are Orbs?

Video of an Orb moving like you describe. (but it looks like a flashlight to me)

Thanks Laureth. That link doesn’t quite look like what I saw, but that first link is very satisfying information. It’s definitely winter, and I was thinking about some weird stuff at the time, and that might’ve attracted it to peek out or something. I know part of the reason I couldn’t sleep was because I felt weird (alternating light and heavy body sensation). So honestly, I’m willing to accept a ghost explanation. I think now I want to know if there’s anything to their colors :{ Seems like most of the orb stuff (that’s definitely the key word here, thank you again) is mostly black and white… I’ll try looking when I’m not behind on sleep, heh.

There’s only two type of explanations, either they are fallen angels (demons) what the secular world sells you as “ghosts” but are not deceased loved ones and friends or they could be messengers of God (angels), but I dbout that they would hide because they are serving a God who won’t confuse you, chaos is not of him but his adversary.

Any chance a beam from a laser pointer can get into your room from outside? (or from a roommate?)

Um, there’s also autokinesis. It’s the phenomenon where if you see a point of light in the dark, and you stare at it, it starts to move. It’s just your brain playing a trick on you. What the light actually is, well, there are about a million possible explanations. All more likely than anything otherworldly.

@robmandu No roommate, I just live with my (sleeps like a rock and isn’t into freaking me out) boyfriend in a dangerous neighborhood.

@EmpressPixie Yeah, that’s also possible, especially since the router (with it’s smaller but very similar green beeping vertical lights) was about 5ish feet away from it. On the other hand, I was just turning over in bed when it caught my eye. Before, I had just had my eyes closed trying to sleep, pretty sure I wasn’t staring at any light in the room in some crazy zombie method attempt to drift off, you know? :) It is possible that by staring at it, I had made it move in my mind, that’s pretty reasonable.

I just checked the bag again this morning. The spot where it appeared only has clothes and a dull gray, plastic (not-electric) lint roller. While I was checking the lint roller around in the light, I realized two things: 1) this isn’t reflective enough, and it was fairly tucked away 2) there is mention of something about static in the link Laureth provided. Here it is: “The consensus is that small orbs take up the least amount of energy and apparitions and other fuller shapes take up the most. In the colder parts of the year, it seems that ghosts tend to find it easier to take on shapes other than orbs. That’s when there is the most static electricity in the atmosphere” Maybe it’s a static-electricity trick, eh?

Thanks guys.

@Toy; are you nearsighted? Without glasses in the dark, your eyes play tricks, and things can look deceptive, different and odd.

I occasionally have noticed what I thought was a bright light in the sky; it turned out to be the reflection in my window of a brass hanging fixture. (Or possibly Elvis’ belt buckle.)

Look up “ball lightning”. Just a thought.

I’ve had that little deep blue lights whooshing around my bed once with no light source to be found. Lights off in room, closet light on, curtains drawn.

I figured I had an electrical storm in my brain and decided it was just plain cool. No extra thought needed. :)

Have you ever done acid or mushrooms? It could be a slight flashback. I had a friend who would on occasion see orbs when he would wake up and finally went to the doctor. Doc said it was possible that he was having flashbacks. He said drugs can get absorbed in fat and that if you burn off fat that contains remnants of drugs it could cause a slight flash back. He also said it happens during the day when you burn fat, but that most don’t notice it but at night it is quite noticeable.

Weird! Could you start sleeping with a camera around you? Maybe that could provide some insight?

One word: Phosphenes.

edit: keep in mind -when you move your eye, the light will move just as fast, and seem to flicker about. Like Tinkerbell. Try to get some sleep.

@gailcalled Yeah, I’m pretty near-sighted (real bad astigmatism). Your explanation is definitely one I’ll have to look up for sure :D

@ asmonet Yeah, but if you saw them again, wouldn’t you start to wonder?

@Sueanna I haven’t, but that’s a very interesting thing if true. I’ll have to pass that on.

@knotmyday Ooo, that’s also very interesting and is a pretty probable explanation.

@loser I don’t have a camera anymore :’( I want one though… the only other time I saw one of these lights was like two years ago. It’s just by dumb chance I wake up to them apparently? However, I did find this, which is about the size and appearance (except mine was green) of what I saw, specifically just the part where it moves across the cat (mine also had a bit of a light trail).

But speaking of cats, and I didn’t mention this because it could’ve been a mosquito or something (it’s normal for her to chase moths at night, but I didn’t see one in this case), when I went to my living room to look it up online (and hug my cat heh) she squirmed out after a couple of minutes because something had caught her attention on the coffee table near my laptop. I lifted the laptop to see what she was looking at, and there was nothing there. She stayed focus on it in that empty space, and then jumped down to chase it (and I remember her specifically pushing her paws up against the door) into the room. When I went in myself, I just saw her grooming herself. I took her back, we both settled in again, and after about 3 minutes she squirmed back out again to follow something “invisible” again, and then chase it to the room. Again I just find her grooming herself. I’m not 100% if that’s related? She’s a playful 1year old cat.

@toy: Maybe, for about five minutes. :)

I’m almost entirely certain it was the phosphenes thing, just a firing in the brain. Odd, but explainable. :)
