Do they work?
My freaking head feels like someone hit me with a baseball bat…

Some people swear by Alcohol X

Many people I know tell me Chaser doesn’t work. What’s your experience?

i just drink 1–2 glasses of water before going to sleep after a drinking session.

I’d say, drink all the water you possibly can.

My best remedy is always more sleep, but I do know people who say alcohol x is amazing. I’ve heard weed is good. I don’t really know anything about chaser though…

Alka-seltzer and a bunch of water in the morning always does me good after a long night of drinking. Of course the best remedy is a little hair of the dog.

One of the biggest hangover culprits is dehydration. Drink a few cups of water before and after sleep. I have never taken those pills but the skeptic in me says they don’t work, or else people would be getting smashed every night and that company’s shares would be worth hundreds. But on an evaluation of the Alcohol-X page, I now consider it to be plausible. I visited that Alcohol-X site (after turning off my speakers, ugh), and was reading their ‘how it works’ page, their explanation of what causes hangovers does appear to be sound. Cross referencing some of the info turned up this disulfiram drug, which works by delaying the Acetaldehyde conversion, thus prolonging sickness (the drug is meant for alcoholics trying to quit, almost an insta-hangover pill, so this does make sense)., so speeding up the conversion as these pills proclaim to do would logically result in less hangover indeed. I very rarely get hangovers so I am not running out to get a bottle of this stuff, but I would consider buying it in the future if I was gonna have an all-out party.

Hair of the dog? Are you serious? I thought that was an urban legend. The LAST thing I want to do when I feel sick from too much liquor is put mor liquor in me. It makes no sense.

Menudo, water, and a nice cold beer. I’m going to get drunk tonight just so I can have that tomorrow morning.

I work for 2 large liquor makers and when we all get together it is a fist in the air drinkathon from 5pm to bar close depending on which city we are in. We are then back up for work at 7am. This goes on for a week sometimes. The best thing I can tell you is to never mix your liquors, don’t feel the need for that “last one,” sip don’t chug and take some Chaser. It helps absorb the bad stuff (sugars) and aids in expelling it. Another thing that I suggest is Green Tea, Green Tea, Green Tea the next morning. I drink that stuff cup after cup while in meetings and brainstorming sessions and I feel great by the end of the work day and I am ready to play. Of course after a week of hanging with work folks I take at the very least a week off from drinking. Just remember to stray from sugary drinks, strong mixed drinks and you will be fine with the Chaser. Staying hydrated is key to warding off the headache and remember to eat.

You don’t get hungover if you never stop drinking.

dynamicduo's avatar

No, you just get one heck of a pickled liver :)

The “hair of the dog” remedy does work, even though I am totally with you—I have never, ever wanted more alcohol the next morning when I’m hungover and feeling like ass.

Basically, dehydration and alcohol withdrawal are the causes of hangovers. Even if you don’t have an alcohol abuse problem, your body does still withdraw from alcohol after a night of heavy drinking. I think it may be worse the more you drink in general, as I find that drinking as much water as I can hold before bed and a couple of aspirin are usually enough to prevent the hangover. I don’t drink that often or that much, in general.

None of the supposed hangover cures has proven to be effective so don’t waste your money on them. Take an analgesic such as aspirin and hydrate yourself as much as you can. Then promise yourself you’ll never over-consume alcohol again.
