Who's Your Programming Hero?

Asked by makemo (531points) November 29th, 2008

I’ll start:

Allan Odgaard, creator of TextMate (a text editor for programming). I’m not picking him because I like TextMate, but because I’m fascinated by his video presentations of the features in TextMate, where he often end up in (as it appears to me) heavy duty programming sessions, as opposed to commence simple rundowns of underlying logics behind each featureā€”a true sign of a passionate programmer to me. Here’s an example video, that just makes me sit and stare with envy at his solid skills, experience and rapid thinking (irregardless of the fact that it seems he was in a state of flu when recording this video).

I think he’s definitely above par. But I’m not by a long shot anywhere near a programmer personality myself, so I wouldn’t know how he compares to others. And of course, there are different programmer minds for different tasks.

But without any deep analysis of the whos and whys: who’s your personal programming hero/guru?

Hoping to see a list of the guys and girls who impress you the most with what they know and accomplish in the programming world.

Mine are people closer to me… my girlfriends is the best programmer I know. She knows a large number of languages, but she also helps me debug languages she knows nothing about. She understands how stuff works so well that she’ll sit down and write out a fairly large project in a matter of hours. It’s hard to explain, but she’s definitely above a lot of programmers I’ve seen.

Will Wright.

Without him, I could not play God.

Andrew McClain . He co-programs for Fluther w/ Ben. He taught me Visual Basic. And he told me he’s the best programmer ever. Enough reasons for me :P

Hahaha. I just wanted to reassure everyone that Fluther isn’t written in Visual Basic.

Benedikt Meurer is a very talented programmer who very quickly developed the feature rich Thunar file manager while still managing to maintain an impressive performance. Too bad he doesn’t really update his website, I bet there’s a lot people could learn from him :)

Which brings me to Padraic Brady, who, besides being an excellent programmer and having made several useful libraries, is also a gifted writer and has taught me and quite a few others a lot through his blog.

Matthew Weier O’Phinney largely falls into the same category. He designed and developed the excellent loosely-coupled MVC implementation for the Zend Framework.

I really like Will Shipley , creator of the “Delicious Library.” I’ve learned a lot of great techniques for large projects from his blog. Rock on!

I forgot to post the example video showing some of Allan’s brilliance as a rapid thinking coder:

Here’s the video that had me sold on this fellow.
