I want this domain, but I can't contact the owner, what do I do?

Asked by Magnus (2884points) November 30th, 2008

http://skd.com
I want this really bad, and even badder when I see how ugly it is now.
But I can’t seem to get a hold of the owner, any suggestions?
Do you think it’ll be expensive? skd.net goes for $12k over at godaddy and skdb.com is for sale for $995.

3 letter domains are quite scarce these days, so i think the price difference from 12000 to 995 is more to do with the length of the domain than the actual letters used.
Based on that, I think the domain you want may not be cheap considering that .com is often preferred over .net.

I have often encountered the same problem as you. Domains, taken up by tragically ugly and unused sites and no owner anywhere to be found.
Personally I have never been able to find a solution to the domains I was after…

Good luck to you nonetheless!

PS: I suppose you have contacted the actual registered domain ‘owner’ listed in the domain registrar?

Chances are their’s a better domain you can get for $995. Try coming up with all sorts of variations. Don’t depend on a popular domain to bring in your hit count.

They list their business address, phone number, and fax number on their website along with an email address.

It would seem you’re not going to get much better information than that to get a hold of them through any other means.

I would imagine it would be extremely expensive… like hypeserver said that money may be better spent in other areas unless you have a very well established company the domain fits perfectly.

You’re gonna be paying more than twelve grand for a three letter dot com name, if that Sky Data company is smart enough to know what they have. But considering they haven’t updated the page in over two years now, I’d say you have a better than nothing shot. Contact the company on the page and see if they’re willing to sell it. If they say no, well, you’re out of luck, start thinking of another URL. In all honesty, it doesn’t matter what it is as long as people can remember and spell it.

I tried calling the number… sounds out of service.

Plus it says that it hasn’t been edited since ‘06

Whats the significance of S-K-D anyway?

SKD is short for my blog (SofaKingDiligent)
Ended up buying SKDblog.com, but I still want this.

I think spending 12k on a blog domain is a bit excessive unless you literally make a living of writing there.

There is no real significance with the name. Its simply that it is a 3 letter domain name, there are a limited number of those in existence, and some companies might change their name to better match such a URL.

Ok I’d hate to be a negative nancy again and burst your bubble, but I checked out your blog. I’m not a financial adviser, but I don’t think you’re blog’s in good enough of a condition to be jumping from cheap wordpress theme to going to paying almost $1,000 for a domain. I blog for two sites currently and it took us awhile before we were able to get established. Take things slow don’t rush into paying so much for a domain when your main focus should be on an original site design. Not some cheaply edited wordpress layout.
