Best sites for cheap airfare?

Asked by emilyrose (2272points) December 2nd, 2008

I know this has been asked on here before but wondering if there are any new sites I don’t know about. I want to go to Mexico for the holidays.

I’ve had pretty good luck with Hotwire.

I’m curious about this question too. The answers so far seem to answer the question: “What are some good sites to buy airfare?” I want to know: What is the BEST site for cheap airfare? Emily, maybe you’ll try them and let us know!

For the most part, the sites don’t actually sell their own airfare, they just gather information from airlines and then line everything up for you in their own way. So prices tend to be very close no matter where you shop, and choosing a site usually comes down to the extra ‘features’...

So for instance, Kayak is great because they show you right away when cheap flights are available, so if your dates are flexible you don’t have to try all the different combinations.

farecast.com shows you a history of the lowest prices for your date and destination and then tries to help you decide if now is the time to buy or not. Every time I’ve used it (granted a small sampling of 4–5 times) it’s been accurate and I’ve gotten some good prices.

I think it just comes down to what works best for you… but remember certain airlines don’t give out their fares to third parties and prefer to sell the tickets themselves. Southwest is the big one around here, but I would imagine there’s others you have to go to the source to check.

Thanks, guys. Another thing I wish existed was a site where you can type in where you want to fly from, and then it lists good deals around the world. That is exactly what I want right now! Who wants to go into business with me?? : )

http://www.farecompare.com/maps/compareDestinations.html

even seems to locate you with the IP information…
at least it did for me, maybe I’m special

There’s also http://www.kayak.com/buzz which is similar but a little more open ended.
