What's your favorite road trip music?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12574points) December 3rd, 2008

I’m going on a trip this weekend, and looking for something to listen to in the car different from the same old playlist.

My favorite genres are probably hip hop, country, and pop en espanol but I’m open to suggestions from any.

Wouldn’t it be cool if there was pandora in the car? Oh man…

Swamp Rock, Southern Rock, Trock, Wrock and Classic Rock.

Creedence Clearwater Revival and Blue Oyster Cult.

You can run pandora through your smart phone.

forestGeek's avatar

Try Son Volt’s, Trace CD.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Forget all that other stuff just listen to Justice the whole ride :P

augustlan's avatar

If I’m by myself, anything loud and rocking will fit the bill. If other people are in the car, I prefer nothing or something low and easy. Too many different sources of noise make me crazy (er, crazier).

chicadelplaya's avatar

First thing that comes to mind, especially when traveling during the summer, The Eagles.
Yeah! Oh, and of course Bob Marley!

shadling21's avatar

Supertramp!
Since childhood, that has been my favourite band to listen to the road.

The Eagles, the Guess Who, Bryan Adams, Heart, and Fleetwood Mac also figure into the mix. Is it obvious that I go on a lot of road trips with my parents? This is definitely not what I listen to regularly…

chicadelplaya's avatar

@shadling- right on! I hear ya on that one! However, I’d have to add Wings to that list. Good times!

susanc's avatar

Soundtrack from “Knocked Up”. It’s great fun and you can sing with a lot of it.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Oh and somewhere in there cruising down the road you have to listen to Highway Star and Radar Love

I love a really queer, 90’s mix when I’m on the road.

Roll to me by Del Amitri, plenty of Ace of Base and Oasis, like flameboi recommended. Also, the Empire Records soundtrack is great for the road.

Asmonet took the words out of my mouth with CCR. Tons of awesome suggestions all around, you guys. Now I want to take a road trip!

I listen to a ton a music but I have found that when driving very long distances, more than 3 or 4 hours, putting on electronic music is great. It zones you out and the tracks blur together which makes time seem to slip by. Also if it’s really fast and up beat it kind of fells like your in a racing game haha.

loser's avatar

Bob Marley!

wilhel1812's avatar

Kraftwerk – Autobahn
I cant believe this hasn’t been mentioned yet

wundayatta's avatar

I like listening to my own band’s music. It’s all improvisational, so I can’t help but listen for my own part, and wish I had played it just a little different. It’s funny. No matter how many times I play it, it never changes!

Of course this won’t help you, since you can’t get my stuff. However, a lot of what we do is very meditative and might put you to sleep. This made me wonder, do people like fast, loud music because it wakes you up, or complex but calming music on their road trips?

PupnTaco's avatar

“Autobahn,” yes!

Bruce Kaphan’s Slider is crucial if you’re driving anywhere desert-like or prairie-like.

He has the whole album available as free MP3s on that page – plus cover art!

Music? For long trips I listen to audiobooks. Get a good book off of like audible.com and it will easily keep you entertained for the entire trip.

saranwrapper's avatar

Graceland by Paul Simon. Best album to listen to while driving.

steelmarket's avatar

Pat Metheny, especially the early album The Pat Metheny Group.

peedub's avatar

This American Life is awesome for road trips. I just hammered out about then this last weekend.

pixelkid74's avatar

I would have to go with Phish and/or the Beatles.

Love the idea of “This American Life” playing as well. Any Sedaris would be great as well but it would kind of depend on what part of the country we were driving through. :)

arcoarena's avatar

damn pandora for the car…thats ingenious. haha

but for hip hop at least. i would definitely recommend Tribe Called Quest, BLACK STAR (mos def and kweli), Gang Starr (moment of truth is my favorite album), Jurassic 5, the Pharcyde, Wu-Tang, The Roots, Common, Nappy Roots

maybe some jam tunes would fit well too for road trippin’. The Allman Brothers blow my mind while driving. The Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, G. Love, maybe some Herbie Hancock

annd i don’t know if you listen to any electronica but if i were goin on a road trip i’d put some Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Girl Talk

and just a few other recommendations are the Mars Volta, some Modest Mouse.

Also, if you like funk/jazz at all (like old incubus) i can’t recommend LETTUCE enough (album RAGE). They are insane! Saw them at Allgood festival this year and i couldn’t contain myself. lol

music is kind of my passion so sorry for listing so much but throw a few of those in pandora and see what you think :) hope you have an awesome trip

@ arcoarena you have some great taste in music!

I have a giant mix of about 350 songs that I can sing along with (the kind of songs i know every single word to), and when I’m driving, especially by myself, I hook my ipod up with a tape adapter and sing away. I drive from Missouri to Georgia a lot, and it is just the right length.

steve6's avatar

That’s what I do. Ipod with tape adapter. I told her to use her smart phone for Pandora radio. I use the tape adapter for that too. Works really well.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

Steve, if you think I have a “smart phone” you must have mistaken me for someone else. I have no “smart phone” – my phone be dumbbbbb. It knows how to ring when someone calls me and how to dial out when i press the right buttons, and that’s about it.

Tits, (heehee heeeheehee) do you care to share what any of these 350 songs are so I can consider adding them to my “road music” mix as well?

La_chica_gomela's avatar

uberbatman, I downloaded “We are Your Friends” and I have had it stuck in my head all day!

El_Cadejo's avatar

@la chica gomela yeaaaaaa justice has that effect lol
this song is probably my favorite from them, though this is a close second

PupnTaco's avatar

The Gourds’ cover of “Gin and Juice.”

La_chica_gomela's avatar

Thanks everyone! I added Justice’s “We Are Your Friends”, Fonseca’s “Te Mando Flores”, and several Eagles songs to my mix, as well as some other new stuff. Great suggestions all around! We had an awesome trip! Thanks again!

@Tits- zOMG. Please tell me you copied and pasted that. That is one impressive list.

TitsMcGhee's avatar

Haha, no c&ping here; I listed them off my iPod. That’s just a sampling of this playlist… I use it when I drive from Missouri to Georgia, which is about 10 hours, and it’s the perfect length.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

nothing beats Moab by Conor Oberst. i’d like to write you up a playlist but i don’t know how well the music i like fits into what you like. but i don’t think you can go wrong with Moab. “there’s nothing that the road cannot heal/there’s nothing that the road cannot heal/washed under the blacktop/gone beneath my wheels/there’s nothing that the road cannot heal…..see those headlights coming towards us?/that’s someone going back/to a town they said they’d never, yeah/they swore it on their lives”
ah it’s so good. <3
