What is this on my finger?

Asked by Raggedy_Ann (455points) December 3rd, 2008

I’ve got what looks to be a ingrown finger nail or wart on the side of my ring finger on my right hand. The area around it looks like it might be swollen and it’s slightly red.

Most likely is a paronychia based on your description, though without a photo it is impossible to tell. Google also has a bunch of paronychia images that might match your condition. If you want, you can upload a picture for me (us) to look at so that we can help you better. Good luck.

@shilolo- Although it’s more on the side and not near the cuticle, the picture on the link you provided looks pretty close. It really didn’t give any suggestions as to how to get rid of it. Any ideas?

@Raggedy Ann. I included a link in my edited answer above that shows more pictures. As far as the treatment, it depends on the severity of the infection (again, we are assuming it is a paronychia, but it could be other things). For now, you can try soaking it in warm water (+/- some antibacterial soap). If the infection becomes more involved (i.e. it becomes more painful, red, forms an abscess), then you will need to have the abscess drained. Sometimes, this happens naturally as a consequence of the warm soaks, and other times you need a doctor to numb the area and open the wound so as to release the pus. In summary, if you are concerned, you should go see your doctor, but if it is mild, try some home remedies (the soaking followed by covering with some triple antibiotic ointment) first.

I hurt my big toe while playing badminton. The shoe was too tight and the toenail broke because of that. My toe was badly swallen. Now, i can see dried blood under the nail some new nail is growing under the old one. Slowly the old one will drop off and the new nail will fully grow to replace it. Have you hurt ur finger before this? If yes nothing to worry.

@mea05key- No to the best of my knowledge I haven’t hurt it in any way.

I’ve made an appointment for later this afternoon to have my finger looked at. I’ll post an update either later today or tomorrow.

Hope its nothing serious, ann. In the mean time, take care.

UPDATE! Turns out to be nothing more than a wart that had developed a callous. The doctor froze it and then cut it out. Looks and feel much better.
