Where to live in Brooklyn?

Asked by rollid (98points) December 5th, 2008

My boyfriend and I are moving to NY in June and I’m trying to scope out the rental situation early so that I won’t be too shocked when I get there. We are hoping to find somewhere in Brooklyn for between $1200 and $1700 a month, aren’t looking for roommates, and value a safe neighborhood and a fun/hip environment (coffee shops and bars within walking distance, cool music scene, etc) over lots of space or a new building with amenities. Is this a possibility? Any tips on neighborhoods to check out? If I’m dreaming here, what are some more reasonable expectations? Any other advice on moving to the city is also appreciated. Thanks!

Personally, my family used to live in New Rochelle – and anytime we wanted to go to the city we’d travel by train/drive a car.

I just saw a really cool bit on TV about the Gowanus neighborhood, and the canal area. This site may be helpful. It’s Brooklyn focused, has rent range, attractions, etc. listed.
