Intense Growing Pangs From Cold Feet?

Asked by desiree333 (3219points) December 5th, 2008

When I dont wear socks during the night, or if i have socks on then take them off and walk on a cold floor, or if I wait for like 10 min after my shower to put socks on i get really intense growing pangs. Mostly in my feet. Also really bad in the part of my leg below my knee in the back of my leg (the muscular skin that is sort of jiggly..)Also in the front, top of my thigh. Anyways i’ve had it all my life and i assumed it was normal, but then i started talking aabout it to my family, friends and they all say that they dont have that and its not normal. Then i was telling one of my friends and she said that her grandma has those symptoms too, but she has arthiritis. Im not very old, but is it possible i might have arthiritis??

Wear socks then?

Do you mean leg cramps? Does it feel like the world is collapsing in on you and the only way to remedy the pain is to cut off the afflicting appendage? I get leg cramps in my calves (that is the name of the “muscular skin that is sort of jiggly”). And the best way to get rid of it is to stand up straight on the foot (make sure you put your heel on the floor. Very important.) Although, I don’t know why you’d get them when walking on the cold floor or after a shower.

shilolo's avatar

Can you explain what you mean by “growing pangs”? I’ve not heard of that as a symptom.

desiree333's avatar

@ trumi, its like really bad, its not just not wearing socks, lots of things set it off. I wear socks pretty much 24/7 and it always still happens. Like simply “wearing socks” is not going to solve it.

desiree333's avatar

@ Les basically sudden changes in temperature on my feet sets it off. And yeah i get them in my calves, it makes me really restless, its a hard feeling to describe.

scamp's avatar

@desiree333 how old are you? I’m wondering if it has something to do with the growth plates in your feet.

desiree333's avatar

im 15 yrs old in 20 days:P

Comedian's avatar

I thought they were called groing pains

scamp's avatar

Ok, so it mostly happens when your feet are cold? Am I understanding this correctly?

desiree333's avatar

@ shilolo, i wouldnt really say its growing pangs, its more like leg cramps, like my calves and feet feel like they really need to be stretched, and it makes me feel really restless. Its really the most annoying pain everrr.

scamp's avatar

Is the skin shiny? Red? Do you have swelling?

desiree333's avatar

@ scamp pretty much, and also sudden changes in temperature, but really only from hot/warm to cold. The pain even starts if say my legs are propped up and the bottom part of my pants pulls up a little bit exposing my feet and my ankles. Little things like that can set it off to.

desiree333's avatar

@ scamp not i dont think so, maybe swelling. I actually have these paing at this moment, like usual, it always happens at night.

scamp's avatar

So it’s mostly temp changes that cause the pain then, right?

desiree333's avatar

yes, and it is always really bad at night, like right now.

scamp's avatar

Ok, another question for you. Does anyone in your family have Thyroid trouble?

desiree333's avatar

um i dont think so

scamp's avatar

And your feet is the only place you have this pain, right?

desiree333's avatar

um no also in my calves and my upper thigh

scamp's avatar

Ok, do you ever get tremors? Like twitching in the muscles?

desiree333's avatar

yes sometimes , not too often but yes. Like sometimes my legs twitch during the night

scamp's avatar

Have you ever injured your feet or legs? And does this seem to get worse if you have an emotional upset?

desiree333's avatar

no i’ve never injured my feet/legs. I have not noticed if it occurs more if i am upset, sometimes it happens when i am really anxious or bored

desiree333's avatar

it mostly happens if my legs ar epropped up, and im very still, like im im watching TV and my legs are propped up

scamp's avatar

And there is no discoloration, right? No redness or swelling, you said, right?

desiree333's avatar

no, i have not noticed anything

scamp's avatar

Ok, You’ve been talking about having trouble getting your hair to grow. Can you remember if this started around the same time as the pain symptoms in your feet?

desiree333's avatar

no i’ve always had these pain symtoms. My hair has only stopped growing for like maybe 3 or 4 months.

scamp's avatar

Hmmm…. I’m thinking all of this over. Have you mentioned any of this to your family doctor? If so, what has he said about it? Have you had bloodwork done recently, and if so is anything abnormal such as low iron, etc??

desiree333's avatar

yes i have had bloodwork and my doctor told me my iron is low, i dont think ive mentioned this to my doctor, but i have had xrays for my neck

scamp's avatar

What is wrong with your neck? Do you have pain there also?

desiree333's avatar

it is sometimes sore, and usually gets sore when i am not doing much motion, but it doesnt get set off by temp changes or anything like that

desiree333's avatar

but it dosent concern me as much as my feet/legs, it just burns a bit and is sore sometimes

scamp's avatar

Ok. BTW. I will stay on here with your for another half hour to help you figure out what to tell your doctor, but I am at work, so if I get quiet for a minute, it just means I am on the phone, ok?

Your feet burn?

desiree333's avatar

i think the soreness in my neck is just from stress

desiree333's avatar

ok, yes its just a bit warm, nothing serious, i think its just caused by stress, i think its just a common thing.

scamp's avatar

Yeah, I don’t think your neck and feet are related, but I am trying t gather as much info as I can so I can help you make a list of questions to take to your doctor’s office.

desiree333's avatar

sorry if i sound like im making a big deal about everytihng my hair and my neck is not a big concern, just my feet/legs. I just dont want to sound like i am tryimng to make a big deal about everything

Comedian's avatar

@desiree: you might want to merge your responses

scamp's avatar

No, it’s ok. sometimes things like lack of hair growth can help point a doctor to a certain diagnosis.

Now, Tell me how many of the following things bother you, ok?

“Burning” pain
Increased skin sensitivity
Changes in skin temperature (warmer or cooler compared to the opposite extremity)
Changes in skin color (often blotchy, purple, pale, or red)
Changes in skin texture (shiny and thin and sometimes excessively sweaty)
Changes in nail and hair growth patterns
Swelling and stiffness in affected joints
Motor disability with decreased ability to move the affected body part.

desiree333's avatar

sometimes people tell me i look pale, but not often.
my skin sometimes get itchy
my hair has slowed down in growth alot
my neck gets sometimes stiff
thats about it

desiree333's avatar

people were really only telling me i looked pale when i was a vegetarian for 8 months

scamp's avatar

Do you ever get a redness across your cheeks and nose? it looks kind of like you are blushing, or got a little sunburn? And do you get sunburnt easy?

desiree333's avatar

yes i get sunburned easily, but i dont tan very well, and yes during the summer my face does that

desiree333's avatar

i also get heat rash very easily,

scamp's avatar

Ok honey, I want to talk to you more about this, but I am leaving work in a couple of minutes. I am going to give you my e-mail address in your private comment box. that way we can keep in touch. But before I go I want to tell you I think it’s a good idea to make an appointment with your family doctor and tell him all the things we just talked about, and get a physical with bloodwork.

Bear with me. I will keep in touch as best as I can. I will be on again tomorrow morning at ( eastern time, ok. Now check your private comments.

desiree333's avatar

ok thank you

scamp's avatar

You’re very welcome! We will talk again tomorrow, ok? it’s time for me to go home now. Goodnight !
