We always used Mylicon Drops, but I honestly can’t say whether or not it really helped. Good luck, I know this can be a frustating issue : (

We have a colic baby in our daycare, and it seems to help him a lot if he sleeps in the airchair rather than in a crib, so he’s sitting up a bit instead of lying flat.

Time is all I know of. I had it until I was 18 months old and my mom said it was the toughest time of her life because I was in so much pain. She use to hold suckers in my mouth like tootsie roll pops and she said that seemed to help a little bit. That’s really tough and I’m sorry :(

Ugh, Adri, I’m so sorry. Colic stinks.

I’m a nanny and I’ve dealt with my share of colicy babies. Sometimes nothing works, but here’s some things I’ve found that help…
Swaddling! A good firm swaddle can work wonders for all sorts of baby issues.
White noise… hiss “shhhh shhhh shhhh” more loudly than you think you should in the baby’s ear (obviously, not yelling at them, but not the soft baby whisper). Vacuum cleaning helps too sometimes.
Rock/bounce the little one fairly firmly.
The combination of the three is sometimes pretty effective. It simulates the womb, I guess.
The book The Happiest Baby on the Block has some GREAT tips.

The best thing you can do is remember it’s absolutely nothing you’re doing to cause it and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting baby down in a safe place and walking away for a few minutes to regain your sanity.

One thing – what kind of formula is your baby on? My son had colic, or so we thought and he was a mess. I think I was awake for 3 months solid, which would account for my daughter’s very strange hairstyles, in a few pictures! I couldn’t function enough to help her.

We had to switch him to a soy formula, as he couldn’t digest “normal” formula, breast milk or the formulas with the added DHRA(?) that simulates breast milk. Of course, that was the last thing our doctor suggested and over a few days, it helped, a lot!

Mylicon would help, but only for a short period of time. He was miserable. We did baby massage – it helped, then it would start all over again.

All the suggestions above, especially Likeradar are great, they may work. I was convinced that my child was not human and would never stop crying! Eventually, with the change in formula, things calmed down.

Talk to your doctor before you start changing formulas, but it might be part of the reason.

Good luck!

My daughter was colic until the Pediatrician had us switch to soy milk.

Yes, soy milk does help… there’s an organic one we’ve tried… my baby drinks it and we’ve never had any problems. The name is Earth’s Best… here’s the link http://www.earthsbest.com/about_eb/index.php
I hope it works! Good luck!

I too had a colic baby and it is no fun. they told me about the mylicon drops and it worked great along with the soil milk and also used a warm heating pad in the belly of the baby. this seems to help and make the belly so it is soothes the baby and they are not as tensed up. best of like to you!!

Soy helps, but also if you are a nursing mother watch what you eat. Gassy foods that you eat affect the baby which results in colic baby.

krose1223's avatar

Are you breast or bottle feeding?
If you are breastfeeding it could very well be something you are eating. (Beans, broccoli, milk, any gassy foods.)
The baby could be lactose intolerant. My son is lactose intolerant and I tried soy but that made him sick as well. They have lactose free formula, or if you are breastfeeding just cut out dairy products from your diet.

cheebdragon's avatar

Wait, why would there be lactose in a soy formula? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?

krose1223's avatar

No, I’m saying he was lactose intolerant AND sensitive to soy. He can’t have either.
