What can I do about my stinky dog?

Asked by jessturtle23 (3318points) December 9th, 2008

I swear when he gets out of the bath he still stinks. It’s not his anal glands or his face or ears but it smells like it’s his skin. I have tried various shampoos and sprays and over bathe him so he can sleep with me but I feel like I am walking around smelling like a wet dog.

Baking soda absorbs odors well.

Try a shampoo that has lavender in it! It not only smells good but the lavender also deters ticks! I worked at Origins and we had a doggy shampoo there that was good.

I’d ask the vet if you see one regularly. Is he a house dog solely or is he outside a lot?

Exactly what are you doing when you wash him?

It could be a skin condition that a vet would need to diagnose.

It oculd be a skin condition… and sometimes you can’t fix that. My fiancee’s mom had a pomeranian with a skin condition that made her smell horrible. Vet’s around our area never had a solution, so she just lived with a skinky dog and loved her just the same as any other!

*Vets… ugh it’s too early.

it maybe the food u feed him . try food that made for dogs instead of home food. Maybe it is the environment . keep him in the house and see if that changes.

Febreze him.

I do febreeze him but it only last a bit. I blow dry him completly when he gets out of the bath so I know he is dry. He is an outside/inside dog. Thanks for the help you guys.

Have you asked anyone else if they have noticed the odor? It could be that he smells like a perfectly normal dog, but that you are very sensitive to it. Additionally, it could be that his scent is just particularly unpleasant for you, but may be normal to others.

I have a friend whose dog I think smells rotten…but no one in their family even notices. Could be a personal thing perhaps.

Good luck!

Everyone thinks he stinks. I’m going to try to get him some different food and some new shampoo.

My dog will smell funny when she gets real hot. If we’re outside for a long time (even if she doesn’t roll in anything) she’ll have a strange order all over her as if her skin is trying to sweat but only puts out stink instead.

I think maybe he is getting his bottom half wet when he goes to the bathroom in the morning but there is nothing I can do about that. His legs are like a corgi’s and it looks like he was cut off at the knees. I have been using oatmeal shampoo because someone told me he would get hot spots because of how much I bathe him. He does really stink after he has been running around and smells like a ferret. He gets his stink all over everything. I wish he would eat hard food because it could be from the nasty soft food because it stinks too. I’m pretty lucky because this is his only issue. He is perfect in every other way :) When I first got him he humped everything in sight and stunk. He was a couple years old and the asshole, trash that had him never fixed him so he was a maniac. As soon as I got him fixed that went away, thankfully. He left remains on everything.

Persistent odor even when freshly cleaned is an indication of a skin condition, especially if his skin is thickened, has excessive pigmentation (usually black), and produces an oily exudate. I would seriously recommend that you have him seen by your veterinarian. He may have a bacterial infection, be hypothyroid, or any of several other conditions. It’s a pretty good bet that you’ll be dealing with a chronic condition.
