Suggest some new indie rock for me?

Asked by jackson3 (5points) December 10th, 2008

I like really dark, distorted/fuzzy psychedelic indie rock. Bonus points if they have songs that build up to a cathartic explosion of noise and strobe lights and brain melting goodness. Thinking of stuff like Black Mountain, The Raveonettes, Deerhunter, Duke Spirit, etc. Any new(ish) bands that have this sound?

…But not A Place to Bury Strangers. That’s too noisy.

Thanks!

MIA
M83
Mason Proper
MGMT
Midnight Juggernauts

Some of the stuff by The Beautiful Girls is sort of like what you describe. Probably more so from their newest album, Ziggurats, than their old stuff, which has more of a Jack Johnson feel :P

A majority of these suggestions thus far are not what I was looking for at all. The Knife? MIA? Justice? Come on guys, those are electronic musicians! I didn’t and ask you to copy and paste your favorite bands, I mentioned a few artists that I like and am asking the great collective of Fluther to help me find similar ones. (since I imagined would be far superior than a computer program.)

Shrubbery, you were almost on the right track , but your suggestion is far too poppy for my taste. I’m thinking dark. Druggy. Psychedelic. Thanks again.

Don’t forget the guys who started it all:

Guided by Voices

@jackson
I think at least a couple of Breefield’s suggestions were triggered by the statement about “songs that build up to a cathartic explosion of noise”. (I’m not arguing with your criteria, though. I’m just saying that Breefield was giving some honest suggestions.)

Thanks peedub, but I’ve been listening to Guided by Voices for a while and while yes they are fantastic, it’s not quite what I’m looking for. There’s nothing quite dark and psychedelic about them. Perhaps I could give a few more examples of what I’m looking for:

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Blood on the Wall
The Ponys

What about Peter Bjorn and John?
Have you gave them a listen?

Chances are you’ve heard “Young Folks.”

fire water was interesting to check out, and don’t get me wrong, peter bjorn and john are great. but people! i didn’t ask you to tell me your favorite band. the guidelines for answering this question are very simple:

1. assess the bands that i have mentioned as examples.
2. have you heard of any of them? if yes, then continue to step 3. if no, then DON’T bother answering the question.
3. if you HAVE heard of one or more of those bands, choose a band that you think sounds just like them. no, silly, NOT your favorite band. and no, not another band that also happens to be an indie rock band. i mean, pick a band that sounds either like what i described or one of the bands that i gave as an example of what i described.
4 if you HAVE heard any of the bands but you DO NOT know bands that sound like them, don’t answer the question. easy peasy!

i didn’t think it would be this difficult. only one person made a good recommendation so far, and it was a band called Film School and a song called ‘Lectric.

Sheesh. Gracious, much?

You’re not entitled to a perfect answer. People are trying; I think that’s worth something.

This band is effin amazing.

I really dont consider them indie either but “songs that build up to a cathartic explosion of noise and strobe lights and brain melting goodness” brings Justice immediately to mind, as bree said.
I mean come on plus their live show is sick <—tons of brain melting goodness

nice, peedub! that’s more on the right track. the end of the song is sick! i’ll look more into these guys, thanks. everyone take a que from peedub!

wow aidje, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. i really don’t care that you think i’m not “gracious”, i’m flagging your answer since yours is the worst of all so far – it’s not even relevant and makes no attempt to even answer the question. go to yahoo answers if you really want to clutter the answers with “you’re-so-mean” filter. if it gets to you that much, send me a message rather than polluting the answers.

jackson3, I suggested those bands because some of them were indie-rock-ish, and most of them because they are bands that tend to “build up to a cathartic explosion of noise.”
Please, step off your high horse. I’m glad aidje said something. You have to realize that questions / answers around here aren’t bound to some strict code of relevancy. Assimilate, don’t instigate. That’s all I’m saying.

not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but the moment i saw ‘dark, distorted/fuzzy’ i was like THE HORRORS! haha if you haven’t listened to them, try it out.
