What do you think of this design?

Asked by johnny0313x (1855points) December 12th, 2008

Just wondering what you guys think of this design, any suggestions? Its 960x??? there is no fixed height. Just wanted some thoughts or maybe some opinions or warnings. I will probably add alot more to it, I plan on using some kind of news poster like wordpress or something of that nature. Also I will add the .com to the end of the title as well.

Are you allowed to ask questions like this on fluther? Also so far the things im worried about with this layout is 1. the size on 1028 just seems so big to me – 2. the font on the main – lyrics menu and also the load time with so many graphics.

Doesn’t look like her… but I do like the color palatte

There is too much about her as it is. Why would you want anything else about her on a website? Do something more original.

@alfreda – with that picture i was trying to copy this image http://www.britneyres.com/albums/Photoshoots/2008/Circus%20Cover%20Promotionals/normal_176644–25337I14442.jpg
@chyna – I thought about that but that gives you a reason to strive and be better then the rest. If you had nothing to compete against then you are the best automatically but this gives you a reason to strive to do better.

@Johnny, I can’t follow your link to the source image, but you mustn’t use anything that is owned by someone else or under copyright protection. If you didn’t do the art work yourself, haven’t paid for it, and don’t have permission from the owner, you are risking a lawsuit to use it.

I did all the artwork myself. – the source image hm, let me try to edit my post with a better link. When I said copy, i ment from a real photo of her and made digital art of it, i think that is legal right? Oh it was to long for me to edit the other post but here is the image i referenced for the drawn image. http://www.lyonsdesign.info/br.jpg

The the nose. Its what makes her face unique. That means you have to get it perfect, or it looks like a generic blonde woman.

What’s with all the negative space to the left of the header?

AlfredaPrufrock's avatar

Aaah, that’s a lovely photo, but she really doesn’t look like herself in it. You did a great job with the illustration! It’s dead-on with the photo.

I agree, the photo makes her look more like Jessica Simpson.
But the nose is definitely too soft and the lips aren’t quite right.

Otherwise, really good rendition.

johnny0313x's avatar

@spargett – well its not the finished version, just something I came up with and wanted some feedback before I spent to much time on it.

@the rest heh – I agree her nose is def what makes her, I will try to work on it a little bit more and get it a little bit closer, it was actually something I was just working on to do, and then decided to use it in the layout quickly to see how it would look so there is def some touch ups and cleaning up that can be done with improve this.

Does anyone have an pointers on how I can get her nose to look more like it does in the picture or anything else on her?

The font used in the navigation is a little George of the Jungle. I would probably play with transparency on the Britney illustration a bit so you can pull up the sidebar on the right.

And I want 10% if you ever make money since you used the domain name I suggested.

I’m kidding.. Good luck.

johnny0313x's avatar

@johnpowell – I agree I dont like how long the side bar is, and its weird cause i feel the font in the nav as you said is a bit barbaric yet something about it caught my eye. I do feel like there is a better font though.
Haha hey if I am making money off a Britney Spears website then by all means ill hook you up ha. I cant imagine making more then $10 with some kind of ad system though lol So I don’t know how far a $1 will get you….maybe a cheeseburger at Mcdonalds? heh Thanks again for the suggestion though, there is something that just feels right about it, you know what I mean….

I agree with JohnPowell on the nav bar font, and in fact I think your fonts clash. Your title bar is a fairly classic print style, suggesting a newspaper, as I think you intended. (But note, it is like a newspaper’s body font; the banner is often different, maybe even blackface.) If bizarre contradictions and everything being a little out of whack are the desired effect (and they might be, given the subject), you’re on the right track, but graphically it kind of hurts my eyes.

And that’s even before you add a body font for your text portion.

You have made some surprising color choices, and yet I think they do work, again given the subject.

Nice work on the rendition from photo to graphic, though. You shouldn’t have a problem with this treatment unless your subject has done something like trademark her own image for all purposes.

@Johnny, when I was at the grocery this evening, and looked at the Britney pictures in the tabloids, and every single one of them that had a side view looked like she was wearing Jessica Simpson’s nose, and looked heavily retouched. I wonder if she has some sort of agreement with the tabs about profile photos? Here’s a side view of her nose that I found:

johnny0313x's avatar

Alot of her new pictures seem to be very retouched, I guess to try and give her a more youthful appearance maybe? I would say Jessica Simpsons nose is a bit more robust then Britney’s ha, but I see where you are coming from.

johnny0313x's avatar

Okay so i tried something out and went in a total different direction. Since Britney’s new album is called circus, i wanted to try and give the site a circus type feel. What do you think of this, do you think it just went to hell lol?

johnny0313x's avatar

oh and the backgroound behind that would be the whole pin stripe circus tent type BG…..is this to cliche or tacky?

First thing that I can comment on is the harsh gradient bars. They look amateurish and unnatural. Gradients are all about subtly inferring depth, not shouting in one’s face that you used a two-color gradient on header bars.

Second, the side column located far below the large illustration of Britney serves no practical purpose. The first responsibility of web design is to convey information. Decorating the site with a large illustration is all well-and good, but not if it’s obfuscating otherwise important information by pushing it below the screen-fold.

Also, the palette of the site title doesn’t place enough priority on it as a visual element. It sort of camouflages into the background palette.

Other than that, I can’t really offer much else since it appears that your design isn’t finished. You haven’t even showed anything beyond the title and the navigation in the way of typography.

Here is a better idea of where I am going with this..

Vinifera7's avatar

I guess it works if it’s just some blog site.

johnny0313x's avatar

I agree looking at the gradients on my work computer that they are pretty harsh so I think I will rework those, and also your point on the illustration being in the way…ive thoght about that too but kind of enjoy it being there. My thought process was with the first actual news post going up, it will be as long as britney im sure so anyone who visits will see there are things underneath her as well
