What were some popular slang terms from your generation?

Asked by krose1223 (3269points) December 15th, 2008

And what area did you live in?
State your age if you please.

I’m 20 (A WEEK FROM TOMORROW! YAY) and when I lived in north central Florida I seem to remember the term “de-bo” being popular… that was in middle school. It meant to steal, but people said it all the time in a very irritating way.

Then in high school when I lived in northern Texas everything was “like a mug.” e.g. “It’s cold like a mug, it hurt like a mug, she was crying like a mug”

What about certain words? Were things “cool” or were they “narly”? One I’ve noticed people saying is “That’s real.” And to “keep it real.”

41, grew up in Maryland and I was, like, totally an 80s kid! So good things were like, gnarly or rad, bad things were like, grody or – briefly – gag me with a spoon! We also had the ‘like a mug’ thing…like, what in the hell was that all about?

Edited to add: My grandmother was appalled by the number of times I’d say ‘like’, and started to repeat it after me every time I said it over a number of days. It broke the habit! Until, like, just now!

That is such a groovy question, krose! Right on! We were tripping and it was a gas! The bad times were heavy, a bummer, a real drag, but the good times were far out, even outta sight. Everybody had their own bag and we would come together for a cool happening, or just hang at a brother’s pad. Neat, huh? Keen-o. Can you dig it?

@January. We must be from the same generation. All those termsrang a bell. Cool, huh?

@january.. I am right with you too. and another one was the word “dude” and “whatzz up?” and ” hows it hanging” “did ya do your homework last night” that was a very popular one here.

I don’t know if it has anything to do with my generation, but a friend in college always called things ‘janky’ if they were messed up in some way. Especially teeth. She couldn’t stand people with “janky” teeth. And now I use that work all the time.

I am from Ohio, 23, and we used to say Dedo too! Like “did you just debo my lighter?”
It came from the movie Friday as the antagonist was named Debo and he would steal shit haha. “Gank” was another term for stealing.
