General Question

I need ideas for something that's heavy but cheap.

Asked by Magnus (2884points) December 19th, 2008

I bought these Decoy boxes from The Onion for some people for christmas. The thing is though, the real gift I’m giving are starbucks giftcards. So if the box says it’s an mp3 player for dogs but the box weighs as much as a business card, the receiver will know something’s up.

So I need to fill the box with something heavy, but cheap, as cheap as possible. Any suggestions?

A brick? Some sand? You could fill it with sand and then put the gift card on top. That’s not strange.

Laundry detergent? It’s like sand, but more useful.

Weights? Like pie weights or washers?

Fruitcake, it is heavy and this would be a perfect use for it.

Bags of cheap cat litter would work too.

Water balloons.

go to the 99 cent store and walk around, they have all kinds of crap.

cheebdragon's avatar

yeah im with augustlan, use rocks…....

but not cocaine…

Rocks were always the stand-by for this. Not only are they free, but they come in all shapes and sizes to fit all boxes. If you’re somewhere with snow though it’s a bit tricky, but still possible to find.

Throw in a couple of cans of beans.

richardhenry's avatar

Coal is cheap.

Magnus's avatar

Rocks are dirty, canned beans or anything canned was a good idea.

I love you fluther.

richardhenry's avatar

No no, I have it. A human head.

dynamicduo's avatar

Oh there you go, go down to a foreign food market and buy strange canned items to put in. Like squid tentacles. Or chicken feet. Or weird mushrooms.

Looks like Osmium is the densest natually occuring element.

It’s oxide is extremely volatile and toxic, though. So only use it to give those Starbucks giftcards to folks you wouldn’t mind never seeing again.

you should paint the rocks and tell people its a pet rock , then you’re actually giving them 2 gifts.

greylady's avatar

Rocks are not dirty if you wash them! You can also paint them or put names on them.
If the people have dogs, put in dog food, if they have cats, put in cat food. If no pets, put in rice or canned goods that you have in your cupboard and haven’t used.
Sidewalk salt is good if they live where it is icy. I like the idea of putting in something useful, in some way or another.

Lead fishing sinkers.

Bags of trash? The scent will confuse them as they try to figure out what their present is.

A bar of soap might fit well in your box.

Gruz06's avatar

Pennies, that would do the trick.

@nikipedia If I could give you a Great Answer 10 times I would.

How is it remotely possible that this thread haven’t had a yo momma joke yet?
Holy crap, we’re a mature bunch.

Potatoes. Sacks of potatoes. And a few defunct hard drives.

judochop's avatar

You should try some of this. It’s heavy on the heart but not too heavy to lift.

I like the rock idea. Rocks can be washed. There resale value of the story is great:

“So, what did you get this Christmas?”
“I got a ROCK.”

Great shades of Charlie Brown…

Magnus's avatar

Ended up buying two for a dollar cans of corn, thanks for your help.

richardhenry's avatar

The head would have been more festive.

robmandu's avatar

Coffee and corn?!? The results of that combo are… well… What were you thinking?

judochop's avatar

@richardhenry:Only if you included a Rudolph nose and a santa hat.
