What kind of gardening gift can I get for my grandmother for xmas?

Asked by emilyrose (2272points) December 19th, 2008

I want to get a small gift for my grandmother for xmas. She is an amazing gardener. Any ideas? It has to be something I can buy online and have mailed to her. She already knows how to garden, so she doesn’t need “how to” books, I was thinking more along the lines of a handy tool, kneeling pad, something like that.

Can you get her a gift certificate for some heavy labor provided by a teen-ager? All good gardening grandmas like someone else to dig and carry heavy rocks. Usually the local HS can find you someone. I have used 10 such teen-aged males during the past twenty years. I get them at the beginning of 11th grade and lose them when they graduate.

That is a really cool idea but a bit complicated since I live across the country : )

My mother was a gardener. I hope this site will help you decide.

Smith and Hawken is also a good albeit spendy site, to take a look around in. If you place your order by the 20th, they’ll be able to ship it by Christmas.

The distance does complicate things.
How about asking grandma whether she would be interested in doing the research and then pay for it. Here it is simple for me. I call the guidance counselor at the local (and only) HS in the area.

Another nice gift if your grandma can handle the labor is the 100 daffodil bulb collection at White Flower Farm called The Works. They come at the appropriate time for your grandmother’s area and are staggered as to blooming time and colors.

Can she still bend over really well? Also, you can find some really great seeds and send them to her.

@gail—really cool idea! I just ordered something from Gardener’s supply (Thanks GAMBIT!). My grandmother has impeccably tacky taste and I found something a little cheesy that I know she will love. Thanks for the other ideas! Now I have to figure out what to get my other gramma! New question to follow…....

A gardening stool. Saves the back and knees.

We bought another keen gardener a gadget for making small bio-degradable plant pots out of newspaper.

A nice pair of Felcos is always good.

@gail-your welcome.

(And I learned that Felcos come for both lefties and righties and w. extra springs).

GAMBIT; What did I thank you for? Or what did I forget to thank you for?
