Am I the only one who's more tired if I get greater than 5-6 hours sleep?

Asked by Sakata (3347points) December 21st, 2008

Over a lifetime all you ever hear is “get a full 8 hours sleep” but I can barely function the next day if I get more than 6. Now occasionally I’ll sleep for 10–12, but that’s typically once every 2 weeks or so.

I will note, however, that when I fall asleep I’m pertty much in a coma. I’ve been told that I hit R.E.M. sleep almost immediately, so at least I’m using every minute of my time.

Basically I just want to make sure I’m not shortening my lifespan by only getting 5–6 hours of sleep per night over a LOOOOOONG period of time (like years.)

When you seep for 10–12 every few weeks that’s a sign you have sleep debt. You’re probably just not used to getting full night. Try it faithfully for a month, and see how much more productive you’ll become. It’s much better for you.

I’ve always been told that you can’t make up for lost sleep. Granted I’ve never looked into the truth in that statement (and at times seemingly proved it wrong) but I bought into it nonetheless. And extra 4–6 hours on a bimonthly basis doesn’t really seem like enough to pay back the 14–28 hours I’ve lost.

lol…math

Sleep debt isn’t something you can compare like that. It’s cumulative, your body can’t tally how many hours and then sleep to match. And it’s true, you can’t. The long term effects will still be there.

I sleep about 7 hours. Today I slept in until 7 and that’s fine. But if I slept in later I would feel yucky when I got up – all stuffed up and getting a headache. Not sure why that is – but I do need my coffee when I get up, so it could be that I didn’t get it at the same time.

I wish I could sleep in for 10 to 12 hours! Then again, if I woke up and saw 10 or 11 on the clock, I would feel like I wasted so much time. I guess I’m just a morning person!

Oh no. Mornings = the devil. And I have to be at work at 7 every day (30 minute drive)

no, I usually sleep between 4–6 hours daily anymore than that it’s an overdose for me and I’ll want to do for the rest of the day is sleep! sometimes, I may only take a nap for an hour or so and I’m ready to go.

I don’t think sleep is a necessity for me it’s more of a really nice perk or a wonderful luxury.

@autumn43: “Slept in” until 7? When do you normally wake up?!
