Meta Question

Is Fluther a Q&A site or a community blog?

Asked by tonedef (3935points) December 24th, 2008

I know that every post has to technically be a question, but it seems like half of the questions are stuff like, “What is the best new Playstation game” and the other half are more like “Can you believe this shit?” followed by links to a current or philosophical issue.

So- there’s the question. What was Fluther originally intended for? The site design of Fluther isn’t quite Yahoo answers, but it isn’t exactly metafilter, either.

How do you perceive Fluther? How do you use it?

I always thought that it was a question and answer site where people got together to share their experiences and to help one another. If things go well you might even make a few friends along the way.

Answers from people.
We think there’s still nothing better than getting an answer from a person. So we made it easier. Just ask Fluther, and we’ll direct your question to people who can help. Simple, isn’t it?

Ordinary experts.
Imagine having five Uncle Franks to answer your car questions, eight Aunt Marthas to ask about astronomy and six Grandma Gerties to advise you on your garden dilemmas.

Tapping into our collective is like extending your entire network of knowledge. And Fluther lets you share your massive brainpower with others.

Right, but I’d say only 1/3 of questions fit into that explanation. Hence this question.

Your question was “What was fluther originally intended for.” That’s what it was originally intended for.

Your final question (what do you use it for) is a matter of opionion will differ for each individual person.

I was only answering the first question, which is a fact-based question.

It’s a community Q&A site, great for sharing opinions and learning from each other’s perceptions.

Or it’s a lazy man’s Google. (i.e. “What is the capital of Suriname?”) JEEZ

It seems like it’s original intention was a pretty cut-and-dried Q & A site. I think it has evolved past that, into a place to gain knowledge/wisdom/insight as opposed to just an ‘answer’. Further, whether the founders intended for it to become a community or not, it certainly has. I, for one, could not be more thrilled!

Fluther is what you want to make of it…

Surely it takes more effort to fluther than to google. You have to become a member and then try and work out the answer from the stream of abuse you get…

LOL, lightlyseared! Often that’s the case!

But I’ll take it – compared to the cut-and-dried experience of Google, which doesn’t always answer tough questions. (“Can I change a car battery in the rain?” Google? Help? Nah, I’ll try Fluther.) I really value the personal responses.

Oh, to answer the question… well, maybe it’s a blend. Sure, there’s straight questions and answers. But I consider it to be a community, which does many community-like things. Discuss, argue, abuse occasionally, celebrate each other, bicker, moderate itself, etc. And of course, Lurve each other.

It’s a community question and answer blog site like thing. Unique, for sure, that’s why I like it :)
