Why does my blu-ray disc STILL have the black bars on top and bottom?

Asked by Arick (27points) December 26th, 2008

Ok, I have a Samsung 42” LCD 1080p TV, Samsung Blu-ray player and I popped in Hancock blu-ray disc last night and it STILL had those black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Although the picture and sound were awesome, why does it still have the bars?

It depends on the aspect ratio of the movie. The type of disc has nothing to do with the ratio that the film is produced in. Some films may fill your television, others may be wider than. Wider than video will appear with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Hope this helps.

just as Richard said, some films are going to fill up the screen where as others do not. For example, the movie the Dark Knight was shot using at least two different methods. One being Imax, in which it would fill the entire screen, but any scene not using the imax cameras, it would have the black bars.

One thing you can do is use the Zoom feature in either the blu ray player, or in your television to help fill the screen. Sometimes doing that, you might lose a bit on the sides, but you can’t really tell all that much.

I prefer watching movies in ‘letterbox’ or wide view, it’s closer to the theatrical experience. Turn off all the lights while you’re watching, and you won’t even notice it…but will still get the benefit of the wide view.
