How does your hair get those tiny knots?

I honestly have no idea, but I get them once in a while, too. I’ve wondered the same thing but didn’t figure anyone would know the answer.

Same here. Once in a while I single out one strand with a knot in the middle or higher. Not at the end, which, could be more explainable. It’s like the dryer sock elves.

Guessing. When the end of a hair snaps off (like through combing), it damages the end, creating split ends. Because hair is not one uniform filament (the inside or outside may be weaker or stronger), the split ends bounce back from being snapped and end up with a bit of curve to them. When curves are next to each other, they can intertwine, or knot – the same way that, on a larger scale, curly hair knots up if you don’t brush it out often.

I get those too. but my hair is curly so i guess it sort of explains itself. and i tie it in knots….

My hair is curly too. I still don’t get how it just happens. If we take a single strand and try to knot it we probably would be trying for hours.

I really thought I was the only one this happens too. This problem was the main reason I cut off all my eight inches of natural curly hair now I’m sorry for that bad decision. I will continue to google this problem to find the cause and how to solve this situation.

This was the best I could do until I confirm this frustration with a hair specialist on Afro American hair texture. I hope this info. help most of you that experience this problem.

I’m a Caucasian male with straight, short, thinning hair and I get these from time to time since the past twenty years. So its not a women’s only issue nor a curly hair, Afro-Caribbean thing. I have never had thick hair, nor had it very long, the longest its been was just below ear length, nor curled it ever, used to apply tons of mousse, gel, spray when younger, never got these, and then they just started coming up, but rare.
