Why do I have bruises on my legs?

Asked by shadling21 (6501points) January 2nd, 2009

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had bruises on my upper thighs. I can never remember bruising them, though, and the bruises last for months. What might have caused them? Should I be concerned?

I always forget to ask my doctor this question.

Write it down so you don’t forget to ask on your next visit. Maybe you should make an appointment just to discuss this so you won’t forget again. You really should get this checked out. I hope it is nothing serious.

Have you ever had your potassium levels checked?

shadling21's avatar

@alfreda – Nope.

EDIT: Um… Should I?

I know my SO had a huge bruise on his torso for the longest time. When he went out into the sun it finally went away the next day. It was the craziest thing because the bruise was really bad and it was gone… Just like that. Maybe you need some sun to make them go away?

if you sleep with a partner, perhaps you’re getting kicked in the middle of the night? And you’re a deep sleeper?

@krose – Alright! Sunbathing in -40 degree weather. I’m down.
EDIT: That’s Celsius, btw.

@Random – Nope, I’m a loner.

are you schizophrenic? perhaps you hit yourself….heh I’m kidding…unless of course you are, then that might be it too…

I am not sure, sorry. I get bruises because on my legs because my brother always attacks me :Þ

Do you take a multivitamin? You may be low in vitamin K or C. K is in green, leafy vegetables.

@90s – Ah, my own brother may be the culprit. Maybe he kicks me when I’m asleep?

@Alfreda – I haven’t taken a multivitamin since I was 10 or so. And I certainly don’t eat enough vegetables. I’ll Google this. Thanks!

I agree with the vitamin idea. Have your CBC ( complete blood count) and coagulation times checked. Will require doctors order and stick at lab, but will rule out any blood issues causing the bleeding/clotting/bruising.
Do you have a piece of furniture you keep banging into?

@alfreda. Hypokalemia (low potassium) is not associated with bruising. Lack of vitamin K, on the other hand, is associated with bruising. However, it would be rare for an otherwise normal person to be deficient in vitamin K.

Do you itch it too much?

Aw, thanks, shilolo. No one’s called me normal before!
Any idea what it could be?

I read a book and this girl got leukimia and found out by going to the doctors because she was bruising really easily.(i guess its a symptom)

Jack79's avatar

so…not only do you forget how you bruised them, you also forget to ask your doctor?

Apparently you have Alzheimer’s :P

ok, seriously? don’t worry, some people are just like that, they bruise easier. Not very nice, but you won’t die of it.

But I don’t think I hit my legs. I think they magically appeared.
Okay, now I sound crazy…

That’s more or less how my thigh bruises appear. I get into the shower, look down, and go, “Where the heck could that have even come from?” Then I totally ignore them. I’m a quick healer, so they are usually gone in no time.

Coming from my experience I would definitely say it is most likely a potassium issue. I bruise extremely easy and only started doing so recently.. Go to the doctor and ask what he thinks you should do and the vitamins that are needed to rebuild your system.
