What are some good foods to eat when you don't feel like eating at all?

Asked by Allie (17541points) January 3rd, 2009

I was sick (maybe I still am) and I was really hungover the past few days. I couldn’t keep anything I ate down and the thought of eating anything at all repulses me. I know I need to eat something though, so what can I eat and possibly keep in my stomach?

Toast or English Muffin with light butter

Just don’t go to the current thread about abusing food.

I would suggest the typical BRAT diet: Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. Rehydrate sensibly and eat light for a day or two. Hoe you feel better.

Broth and saltines. Anything with fat or grease might make for a queasy experience.

Clear soda (7up, Sprite) and Saltines. (Also good for morning sickness.) Avoid dairy products as well as anything oily or greasy. Some dry cereal like Cheerios (plain, out of the box) if you feel up to it, or some instant oatmeal.

For some reason, I used to be able to handle alphabet soup even when everything else was repugnant.

I also jump on the saltines bandwagon. Keep the liquids going.

Ginger ale (or ginger tea if you have it) will help nausea. Even candied ginger.

Go for small snacks rather than large meals.

When you are a bit better, chicken soup (with noodles) is good.

Feel better, Allie!

Ginger Ale is good (Schweppes is what I like best)

Plain white rice with a little bit of butter, or apple slices. Corn flakes, unsugared, might be good too, dry.

I have an issue with my stomach lining becoming inflamed about once or twice a year, when it happens I can’t digest any food. Once it’s over, I basically live on Jell-O, Saltines and Ginger Ale (usually flat, just pour a tiny bit of sugar in and it’ll go flat.) It’s not the best diet, but for a stomach on strike it helps. If only by keeping the hunger pains away. :)

Yeah try soda. The burping is freaking awesome when you feel sick. What about peas? no? ok fine then…

Slim-Fast has vitamins and calories and you can drink it.

I try the above suggestions (minus dairy) and I also get chicken Pho. It’s got the protein, chicken broth, and a lot more noodles than regular soup to pad your stomach, all in one drinkable bucket. Five bucks and almost no work. As long as there’s no MSG in it, I find it’s one of the few things that sits well.

I had to go look up chicken pho, it sounds delicious

Thanks everyone. I’m starting with an english muffin and some saltines right now. We’ll see how it holds. (Fingers crossed.)

I hope you feel better soon, Allie.

To add to the above lists….

Gatorade, if you can tolerate it….

by the bay said it, the BRAT diet. My Mom has been really sick the last few days and I went and got her bananas, rice, applesauce and plain bread for toast. (not wheat in this case). Even though its is disgusting, she needed the Gatorade too as Snoopy said.

I personally like orange juice thinned down a bit with extra water and crushed ice, followed by soda crackers and chicken broth.

Toast with a little butter, and apple juice, watered down if you like…

Popcorn.
I hate it, but it is always a good snack for any other person at anytime if you have just finished a Thanksgiving dinner at the Old Country Buffet, or are suffering anorexia. :)

If you really don’t want to eat, why do it? Just drink water (or some palatable form of water) so you don’t get dehydrated.

asmonet's avatar

@kid: Do you know where popcorn comes from!?

90s_kid's avatar

haha
I remember watching the Amanda show when I was wicked young——there was a skit about popcorn pants. Anyone remember?

When I’m sick, I’ll have chicken broth, toast and flat ginger ale.

Make sure it’s REAL ginger ale. A lot of those sold are actually carbonated water with high fructose corn syrup and a bit of D&C Yellow #5 in a bottle.

artificialard's avatar

Definitely any soups. Minimal chewing, nutritious, and goes down easy. Fresh ones if possible…

Anything with broth could be good. I like spicy Korean noodles with an egg.

Better yet, have a snack before you go to sleep after the party. It will cut the pain in half for the next day!

Thanks again everyone. The english muffin stayed down, then after that the chicken soup stayed down, and I’ve been drinking more water and Sprite. So far so good. =]
I love you all. Heh.

Hey—happy new year ; )

A little slice of fresh ginger cut into a cup of hot-hot water: both soothing and refreshing. Maybe a little dab of honey….

artificialard's avatar

Not to taunt by cyinnyc’s got it – I’m a tiny person blessed with some wino friends but almost never have hangovers. I just make sure to leave a bottle of water I drink profusely before bed and we’ve often made it a habit of getting late-night food after the fact or I have some cup-noodles.

I don’t know if I’d want to stop you.
That sounds kind of hot.

Oh dear.

Graham crackers – taste better than saltines (unless you have a salty craving). I had the stomach flu just after Christmas, so I know how you feel. Try some Cream of Wheat with a little sugar or maple syrup on top – easy to digest.
