Do you think you're the only person who does something?

Asked by queenzboulevard (2551points) January 5th, 2009

Have you ever thought “I’m probably the only person who has ever done this/thought this/said that?”

Have you ever found out you aren’t?

You don’t have to name it lol

When I’m sketching every few hours I make a series of noises with my tongue. That clawk noise when you drop your tongue down among others, usually it’s the same ‘tune’. And I click like you do with a horse, and the pop you make with your lips.

Click, click,
Clawk.
Whistle.
Pop!

Apparently, I stick my tongue out ever-so-slightly whenever I sketch. I believe it might be a family trait, however, as my father also does this when concentrating (or when extremely tired), my sister has been seen a couple times doing something similar, and we have a cat, a dog, and a horse who all do it when relaxed. Coincidence? Not so sure… ;)

@dlm are you my sister? my dad is notorious for having his tongue hanging out while concentrating.

@dlm: You are not alone. :P

I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who counts stairs the way I do. I always count the floor as a step and a landing as two steps. I honestly do not know how people normally count steps. I’ve also divided my house up into sections so I can take exactly four steps in each section. If anyone else does either of these things, please let me know so I am not alone…

@dlm: Haha, I stick my tongue out when I’m concentrating but I’m the only one in my family that does it. :)

Every time I think I’m the only one who does something, thinks something, acts a certain way, I’m proven wrong. Every time.

I tend to do things with math involved… I count my steps while walking in fibonacci sequence. I’ve figured out that altering my stride length slightly while counting in fibonacci numbers matches the light poles on the sidewalk. That is 1 step there’s a pole. 1 step there’s another pole. 2 Steps theres another pole, 3 steps another pole. 5 steps another pole. 8 steps, another pole (i might walk past a pole but, it seems to line up) Granted the first few sets of steps are very large steps.

When watching a movie with friends or family I tend to look over my shoulder to see if they are enjoying themselves. Not an awkward stare but a brief pause. It’s not “everyone” who I’m looking at but usually a specific person to ensure their having a good time, “the leader”, especially at the humorous parts ( if any)

I used to count everything.

I have a song stuck in my head at all times (not the same song, thank god!) I still ‘play’ with anything that feels like my baby blanket (anything satiny). I eat Grape Nuts with butter.

@asmonet- I’m stealing that. It sounds fun.

I don’t think I do anything completely unique. Does that ever make me feel boring!

Here are a few of my eccentricities:
– When I’m at a bus stop and bored and/or cold, I practice my dances or choreograph stuff, but try to hide it from people around me. I must look very odd.
– When I’m driving and I get an idea, I grab my cell phone and use the voice recorder function to record my thoughts.
– I used to cross myself after sneezing (when I was alone).

I smell (rather sniff) every book I pick up. It is now a habit that I enjoy. Old book smell, new book smell, magazine glossy paper smell, cd booklets, etc. and now I’ve added smelling sheets of paper. Usually when they are warm from the copy machine or fresh from opening in a package.
I have probably met one person who says they do the same thing, but I don’t think I’ve met someone who does it as much as I do.

When I think I’ve stumbled upon something only I do, I always find out I have a friend in the world somewhere who does it.

—When I get home from being away on a trip, I have to touch my things. And go through them.
—When I run into or kick or hit something, I apologize—even if it is an inanimate object.

asmonet's avatar

@shad: Noooo! You’re making me mundane!

Joshin’, enjoy!

@milla: I think I do it as much as you. I sniff paper constantly.

Nimis's avatar

Milla & Mo: I’m a total paper sniffer too.
Emp: Ha! I do a combination of those.
When I run into objects, I apologize and pat them.

shadling21's avatar

@Milla – Paper smells good… I’m not a compulsive sniffer, though.
@as- I don’t think it’s possible to make you mundane.

asmonet's avatar

@shad: In that case: Click, Click, Clawk. Whistle. Pop! All you like. :)
Enjoy the reactions.

Good to see I am not alone. ;)

Glad my family (and pets) are also not alone in the concentrated tongue area! I love some of these other things people do… @EmpressPixie: I also apologize when I run into inanimate objects! People always laugh at that, but I never thought it was weird – I just figured that I had better manners than most people! Ha.

Guess there are no other fibonnacci counters out there?

When I first learned it, I would absent-mindedly rearrange things in fibonacci sequence.
Well, the first few anyway. I don’t remember the sequence anymore. Use it or lose it.
I do this a lot (absent-mindedly rearranging shit) with new concepts that I’m learning.

The whole steps per telephone pole thing is pretty common. Sometimes varied with sidewalk cracks or with a row of trees. Not with the fionacci sequence, but my niece does it while she counts.
