How do you get motivated to exercise?

Asked by suzyq2463 (2224points) January 7th, 2009

I feel like crap. I’ve gained weight (thanks to some meds I’m taking and b/c I’m being lazy). I know I need to exercise, but I just can’t seem to get started. I hate walking (boring), but everything else seems so involved. What do you do to get motivated?

Wii Fit…

There’s Yoga, Balancing, Strength Training, it’s really fun, and it tracks your weight loss, whether you are overweight, at risk, healthy weight, or underweight when you take the daily body test. There’s hula hooping, tightrope walking, and WAY too many things to list. If you are really serious about losing weight, this would be a fun, good, and easy investment to make, and totally worth it. :)

1. Get a friend to go with you and you can motivate each other!
2. Try lots of different types of exercise—swimming, cycling, running, tennis, etc. See which one is least awful.
3. I find it helps me to go first thing in the morning. I feel like shit while I do it and immediately after, but it doesn’t give me a chance to talk myself out of it.

Simple. I do something I love with friends I enjoy. What could be better motivation?
I play Ultimate frisbee. 3–4 times a week.

I see how long I can get my butt to jiggle and then I’m off and screaming to the gym.

Music or an audio book on my iPod shuffle. And/or bringing a great book with me to the gym and reading while I ride a stationary bike or do the elliptical machine. If the book is good enough I forget I am exercising and lose myself in the story. It’s a wonderful escape for 30 minutes or so, so much that I look forward to going to the gym, not for the exercise but for the time to read! Also classes really motivate me. There is yoga teacher and a spinning teacher whom I like at my gym (the Y). That way someone else takes charge of motivating you to get through it, especially a good spinning instructor.

Wii
I’ve lost twelve pounds in the last month while having fun at the same time. I don’t have to leave the house and can exercise in the privacy of my home.

My motivation is looking at myself naked in the mirror, or better yet, trying on my bathing suit. It really makes me get off my butt and go to the gym or just walk.

that wii fit really works? i figured everyone that said that was fooling themselves, but y’all are saying it works?

I tell myself that without the exercise I will look like and feel like crap and that the benefit of exercise (feeling good and proud of yourself for making the extra effort) outways the cost (feeling bloated, lazy, and irritable.)
It is always harder to start an exercise routine than to maintain one. See if you can get yourself outside for a jog or even just a walk everday for a week. It doesn’t have to be for any longer than a half hour. The longer you keep up your regimen the harder it becomes to break it; you will stop finding excuses not to work out the more it becomes a part of your daily lifestyle.

@bmhit Yes, it really works!

that’s really cool! i probably still won’t get/use it. but that’s really cool that it works! i was a hardcore nintendo fan. lately they seem to be more centered on casual audiences. so i haven’t given them any of my money in a long time. haha. i’d probably sell the wii if my mom weren’t addicted to dr. mario. XD

check out the p90x, me and some friends just started it and it seems pretty good so far. You will def get results with it, the work outs are intense. Also the cool thing is, you do it all from home, so you just pop it in the dvd player and go. It covers work outs and diet. I know the web site looks gimicky but I did some research on the web and everyone seems to have good things to say about it. Also, its kind of expensive but if you wan’t to know where to get it for free hit me up (shhhh)
I know this doesnt help you with motivation… but if you don’t have to motivation to work out in front of your tv you wont have motivation for anything

When I lose my motivation I buy a fitness magazine. Reading about all the healthiness gets me really pumped up. I started taking Runner’s World a few months ago when I was really into running, and then I didn’t have a chance to do anything for a period of time (longer than I want to admit) because of work, finals, and life in general, but when I saw the January issue in my mail, I was so pumped I went out for a run before I even finished reading it.

Also, being that it’s January a lot of the magazines have like “tips to keep your New Year’s resolutions and stay motivated” type sections.

(Plus a magazine costs a lot less than a videogame console.)

This helps me to get motivated for everything-

Whenever I want to do something, I pay myself. Whne I tried to quit smoking, everytime I went to the store and didnt buy cigarettes, I would put away the money that I would have spent on the cigarettes.

So maybe for each 30 minutes you exercise, pay yourself 10 dollars? Or every time you go to the store and turn down those brownies, save yourself the money they costed?

I try to excercise maybe three times a week, nothing too excesive or else I’ll get bored. Get an ipod and get OUTDOORS!! Really try it, its so much fun and you wont be bored at all.. One thing that REALLY motivates you is putting pictuers of models in you refrigerator or next to your bed, then you’ll want a body like that!
