What is the best cat litter for a very good cat who tracks the stuff all around the house but doesn't want to.

Asked by francescadellacruz (144points) January 10th, 2009

I’ve tried the sandy clumpy stuff but the cat gets it stuck in his paws and drags it in and around the house. He is a good cat and does not like this.

We use Feline Pine. The look of it actually reminds me of Hampster food – too big to get stuck in kitty paws. There are benefits other than your kitty not tracking the litter around your house, too. It’s much safer for said kitty and generally smells a lot better. :)

One thing that helps use is to have a mat outside the litter box. We also have a litter box (dubbed the “poo igloo”) that has a ramp inside it that prevents tracking.

I tried feline pine, but I found it was nearly impossible to scoop. Smelled all right, though.

@andrew Yeah, that is one thing – you can’t scoop it like normal litter which is kind of shitty. Really, no pun intended… :D But I just scoop under the waste and take some litter with me.

There is a domed Igloo litterbox made for litter kickers—they go in and make a 90 degree turn to get to the litter, which really minimizes kicking. That, coupled with a mat, gets most of the litter off the little paws. A piece of carpeting works better than the rubber litter mats, and a big enough piece allows them to get almost all of it off before they hit the rest of the house.

I just saw Andrew’s post; I’m talking about the same litter box. It’s a bit pricey, like $30, but well worth it.

What Andrew said. I have the igloo too. Oh, and the World’s Best Cat Litter is the world’s best cat litter.

I would suggest The World’s Best Cat Litter

But I would not flush it as suggested. A little pad of astroturf or a dustbuster will take care of the stray stuff caused by the cat burying its little mess.

Scoop Away.
Or just potty train him.

OH! I remember hearing about This!
I personally think it is a stupid invention because cat’s don’t need this whatsoever, but seeing what your cat does, it may be necessary. It might be expensive but it depends on how eager you are for change.

I like Tidy Cats Long Lasting. There is always litter right around the box, but not all over the house.

I have been waiting forever for a forum in which I could express my unbridled enthusiasm for Fresh Step Scoopable Cedar!

And you think I’m totally kidding, but I’m really not!!

It tends to smell better than other litters. I kind of hate the perfumey smell of litter more than cat poop, so it truly is wonderful. And I like to think the litter/cedar combo makes it less likely to clump on cat paws…I also agree a mat works wonders, either a fake-grass Welcome type mat or a rubbery traction one, perhaps.

World’s Best Cat Litter. Hands down. It truly absorbs all stinkiness.

What you might want to try is take normal toilet paper (I prefer Charmin) and tear it into tiny pieces. Tear enough pieces to cover the entire bottom of the box about 3 to 4 inches thick. After your finished with that, take a damp washcloth and place it on the floor at the entrance of the litter box. Then sit down with your cat and explain to it the importance of wiping it’s paws after pooping. Now, place your cat in the litter box and squeeze it until it starts to poop. Stop squeezing after the cat starts and watch to see if it wipes it’s paws on the washcloth after it is finished. If it doesn’t, punish the cat and start all over. I hope this helps. Have a nice day.
