Anyone have a suggestion on quickly getting over a cold/the flu?

Asked by FrankHebusSmith (4319points) January 11th, 2009

I am getting sick, I woke up today perfectly fine, and by mid day I felt a bit of the chills and all my muscles/bones started getting kinda sore. I knew what was coming so I got a ton of OJ and some advil. But I’m still getting worse. I have some friends coming into town on Friday so I want to be better enough to go out by then. Anyone have suggestions?

Drink lots of orange juice because citrus helps – or so I’ve been told. Chicken broth, too.

And don’t forget to drink your NyQuil! =]

work out more you sissy! (inside joke)

Or you can eat an entire raw onion. My father’s friend used to do this everytime he felt a cold coming on – he just ate it like an apple. Guaranteed him healthy everytime. I’ve never done it myself, but it’s a suggestion!

Pretty sure dlm isn’t kidding. My husband grew up in West Virginia, and around here it’s an old home remedy of sorts to make onion syrup for colds!

UUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKKK… onions are sick.

I like them, but I’m certainly not going to drink them! He offered to make me some when I was sick, and I just looked at him like he was out of his ever-lovin’ mind. I did take him up on the homemade chicken noodle soup, though :)

Lots of liquids & rest. Take it easy for the next few days until your strength returns back to normal :)

I take Airborn. It does seem to help me get over things faster.

Also, drinking lots of liquids. I find the Jack Daniel’s really helps to eliminate those nasty germs!!!

Onion soup might be a good compromise? I actually quite like it even normally but you’ll probably need to get something fresh (not from the can) to get any health benefits…

I started taking a multivitamin everyday in 2008 and haven’t had any illness at all (usually I get struck at least once or twice a year). So I’d suggest that to help you heal faster.

Constant liquids. Eat nutritious, balanced foods.

Water – Lots of It… drink about 3 litres a day…
Sleep – your body heal…i think twice as fast when you are asleep… if its not twice as fast…it ‘ll be more than that..
TLC – get someone to look after you – if you can

Keep the fluids up.
I use very hot, Lemon juice, real honey, mixed with Jamesons Irish whisky it’s an old thing from way back, makes you sleep well and smoothes the old throat.
Nice wee toddy even if you don’t have a cold or flu…
Especially on a cold winters night…

Yeah… I definitely was not kidding about the onion. This guy SWEARS by it. Fresh onion soup. like artificiard suggested, would probably be good too. Definitely drink a lot of water and take vitamins – I take one everyday as well and haven’t been sick since I started doing this. Hope you feel better westy!

I wonder why onions works…as h’m sure they do… there must be some scientific, nutritious reason…shall we ask fluther?... or is that taking it too far…. (and is thinking that if there is anyone who knows why onions would cure a cold they must have answered this question anyway perhaps???)
So…anyone here know why?

dlm812's avatar

I always guessed that my father’s friend did this because it opens the sinuses? That’s the only reason I can think of, but he definitely stood by this. Perhaps there is some scientific reason out there…

artificialard's avatar

Wikipedia says that onions may have bacteriostatic properties and/or help to alleviate sore throats. Nothing well substantiated though – like most health affects of foods…

Thanks artificialard!

Today a bunch of colleagues eating in a food court during lunch and we were marvelling at how this odd-looking fellow got some noodles and just was eating a large tomato at the same time like it was an apple. Reminded me of this thread.
