Does that FDA weight loss pill Alli or whatever really work?

Asked by afghanmoose (554points) January 12th, 2009

my neighbor whom i havent seen in a long time had lost 30 lbs she claims in a few months, not changing her diet, being equal with the food pyramid, and she just works as a busy mother/kinder garden teacher. So while following those directions with the pills she said she didnt change a thing, should i believe her,she does look a bit slimmer than before, which was a year ago. I’ve done some research but still can’t find a truthful answer.

The answer is that if you follow Alli instructions you will count calories and exercise which would probably cause weight loss anyway. The thing that gives it the extra oomph is that Alli prevents the absorption of dietary fat which can cause some antisocial side effects. You are advised to limit the fat in your diet to about 200 calories and to skip Alli if you eat a meal without. The more fat you eat, the more severe the side effects. For example if you have a fast food meal, you better have a change of clothing. So a low calorie, fat free diet with exercise will cause weight loss. The Alli regimen is different because you can eat some fats, get the benefit of the flavor without the fat calories sticking around. Of course there is the possibility that with flatulence and explosive diahrhea (?) nobody will stick around.

Anal leakage pretty much defeats the purpose.

Anal leakage no kidding! It’s similar to that Olestra stuff Lays had used in their chips. It is not a weight loss pill, it is a fat blocker. That means that your body will be unable to absorb the fat and oils in the food you are eating. So you know where it goes? Out your butt! Oily poop is really not something you want at any time, let alone when you’re out in public and don’t have a change of clothes.

All weight loss pills/books/methods/etc do is prey on the weak and vulnerable. They will gladly take your money and sell you false promises and hope. The real success to weight loss is twofold. One, realize that it’s not a temporary thing you can do then stop once you’re at your desired weight, it really is a lifestyle change that you need to maintain for the rest of your living days, so find exercise you enjoy and find foods that are healthy and easy for you to prepare. Two, your body is a machine. We eat to fuel the machine, and the machine is built so that extra fuel is saved for later in the form of fat. If you keep a tight grip on what you put into the machine, and watch how much of that energy you expend by means of exercise, your body will have no choice but to start using its energy reserves, and this is when you start losing weight. Yes, metabolism plays a factor here, and yes people are different from each other. But the bottom line is that if you start exercising an hour each day, even if it’s just something easy like a one hour stroll (brisk, not effortless walking), and start eating more healthy foods, you will lose weight. Trust me, it’s best to figure this out early on, and save yourself all the money and time you would have wasted on quick solutions. If any of them worked, we’d ALL be taking them! The fact that we are not is evidence enough that they simply do not work as a part of a long term lifestyle.

Weight loss is not rocket science.

Decrese caloric intake and increase output (i.e. burn more calories).

The thing people lack is will power/motivation.

Will Alli work? Sure. Are you willing to take it the rest of your life? Probably not. So why not make the changes now to a healthy lifestyle and save the money?

We (including me!) all want the easy fix. The cold hard fact is it just takes work/effort.
