How should I credit myself on my Internet videos?

Asked by shadling21 (6501points) January 13th, 2009

I’m going to start making money for the multimedia projects I work on. To promote myself, I need a name.

What would be a good name for this? I’d rather not use my real name, as my mother has driven into me a paranoia about attracting stalkers online. I want to tie my identity to these videos, but I’m also afraid to. Thoughts on this?

I’m considering using the name “Shadling Productions”, as shadling21 has been my username for a long time, and some clients are familiar with the name. At the same time, I blog and vlog about crap with this username, so maybe I should distance myself from it. Here is a chance to start fresh with a new online persona, one that is professional and unique.

My friend thinks “Stupid Face Productions” is appropriate. My other friend suggested “Ranch Flavoured Giraffephants Productions”. Neither really floats my boat.

I would copyright the materials, and use Shandling Productions. You might make sense to file a DBA document in your county or state; your small business administration should be able to advise you on that.

I like Shadling Productions. It seems like it strikes a balance between your two state desires to both associate and distance yourself from the videos.
...unless you don’t want your potential employers, viewers, (?) [people who pay you] to know about your blogs for whatever reason.

Using the misnomer Shandling does amuse me, but I would stick with Shadling if you didn’t like it. Most people don’t dig deep enough in a google search to find more than the thing they’re looking for right that second, if they google Shadling Productions it doesn’t look like any questionable content appears. I say the winner is Shadling then. :)

I would too.

Stupid Face Productions?

Shandling Productions sounds both creative and professional.

@loser – Hah! It was a joke. I kind of like it, though…

@AlfredaPrufrock – Good point. I’ll look into all that business stuff. For now, I’m just working on the name. For now, I’m going to go ahead with projects without actually registering my business.

@La_chica_gomela – Another good point. It is a nice balance, and maybe that’s why I keep coming back to it.

@asmonet – Thanks! I hadn’t even thought to Google it.

Any other ideas for a name?
Also, is the shading/shandling thing a hindrance, do you think?

shadling21's avatar

@AlfredaPrufrock – Do you mean you’d prefer “shandling” over “shadling”?

What sets your productions apart from others? Is there a particular market you’d like to appeal to? Are they dance related? I like Shadling Productions quite a bit, but it doesn’t really say anything about your company. If most of the people you’d work for know you as Shadling, then that doesn’t really matter. However, if you’d like to attract a larger customer base you should use a name that gives an idea of what your company is about.

Shadling does makes you sound a bit mysterious, though, if that’s what you’re going for. Nothing wrong with a little mystery!

No, Shadling, I can’t spell. giggle Actually, I was thinking about posting a question about not being able to spell in my fluther posts. I’ve noticed I make the silliest spelling errors in some of my posts; in retrospect, I often wonder how in the world I could misspell some of the words that I do.

If you don’t use it, can I have Giraffephants? That’s way ballin’.

shadling21's avatar

@augustlan – So far, it’s all been dance-and music-related. I don’t want to limit it, in case it goes in other directions. Also, I don’t really want to attract many customers yet, as I’m still a student and school is my priority. These are all excellent questions, though. If/when I do plan to grow this into something larger, I suppose I’d have to work extra hard at promoting myself.

@loser – Really? Mysterious? Sweet. I always thought it was a weird mixture of maybe-cute and oddly-familiar, with a hint of I-wonder-if-that’s-really-a-word.

@AlfredaPrufrock – I guess you missed this thread, then.

@TitsMcGhee – Do it up. I think it’s quite awesome, too.

I did, or the Alzheimer’s masked it from short term memory.

I’d stick with Shadling Productions then. It sounds professional, and is tied to you. If there is anything out there you’d rather these people not see, get rid of it or rename it.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to answer the original question. Yes, keep Shadling. It’s unique and it means something to you, has something to do with your identity.

asmonet's avatar

I win! Stick with Shadling Productions!

Sweet, thanks a lot guys!
My friends IRL were really no help.

I’d also go for Shadling Productions. And post us a link when it’s up :)
