I am a portuguese medical resident. I will be at the Maiomonides Medical Center at Brooklyn in a few months. What is the best and safest place to live?

I have never been at New York. Where is the best place to search for a little appartment?

How about living in a hotel.
You can get a little apartment, and you’ll have security 24/7 (when you;re at the hotel anyway) and all your stuff will be looked after. If it gets taken, it’s their fault too!
Hotels are usually in the nicer safer places of cities too.

Real estate in NYC right now is very expensive, even for rentals, even with the bad economy. There are lots of people still coming here to live every day. Have you been able to ask a coordinator at the hospital what others in your situation have done? That would be my first step. I would think that they know of places in the area that cater to people in your position.

After that, I would contact anyone I knew personally who knows someone in the city. Word of mouth is the way most people find apartments in New York. Do you have any friends here? The neighborhood your hospital is in, Sunset Park, is reasonably safe, but there aren’t a lot of trains running in the area.

The next best thing is to go through a broker, who will take a fee to find an apartment for you. Corcoran, Halstead Realty and Citi-Habitats have the best reputations. They are all on the internet as well, so you can see what apartments they have available.

Craigslist is, in my opinion, a last resort, but miracles can happen! If you can come a few weeks ahead of time to look, that will be a lot better.

Park Slope is nice but can be a tad expensive. The subway access might also be a problem. The best best might be to contact someone from the hospital to see if they have any placement help.

Thanks for your informations. I have at least two problems. I don t know if there are a coordinator at the hospital and I don t know anyone personally in New York. The opinion about the brokers may be very helpfull. Thanks

@miguel – Call or email the hospital and ask for assistance from the Resident Coordinator. Tell them that you have been accepted as a resident and you want to know how students who are not from New York find places to live during their residency.

I’m sure they’ll help you. The hospital has definitely had residents and interns coming to study there for many years who are from other cities in the US and other countries. They probably have a someone there who knows exactly how to help, and if they don’t, they’ll have a few ideas on what you might do.

:)
