I have always been interested in Romani people, but I do not know any of them personally.

I don’t know any personally, but we have a lot of them in Portland. A ton of them used to frequent a pool hall I went to and were extremely open about their culture and would willingly answer questions that anyone had. They definitely have their own kind of lifestyle, that’s for sure. And by that I mean they knowingly and willingly break certain laws, if their culture sees something differently.

I should also add that compared to most people, they’re weirdly friendly for the most part. And they generally tend to bargain with everyone, for practically everything. Even things that can’t actually be bargained for. Heh. :)

I know of some gypsies in Portland too. They don’t travel though. The guys I know they hustle used cars.

We used to have Irish Tinkers travel round West Coast of Scotland when I was a kid in the 50s.
Have a friend in Queensland who’s family are Romany Gypsies from the UK.
A wonderful book if you can get hold of it is Nan: The Life of an Irish Travelling Woman.
It’s by Sharon Gmelch.
Probably out of print? My copy is published by Pavanne – Published by Pan Books.
The book has a further reading list printed in the back.
