Are there any video file types compatible with both Windows XP and OS 10.3 and higher that do not require any extra codec installations or video player installations?

One I can think of is AVI. I believe Windows media player and Apple’s Quicktime player both handle that without requiring additional codec downloads.

In other words, pristine just-purchased-and-unboxed machines (PC or Mac) without internet connections should be able to play AVI files.
