ART BRUT- if you like punk, try this
NOISETTES – if you like Bloc Party give em a shot
THE RAKES – These guys are fun!!!
NINE BLACK ALPS – Think British Nirvana
THE EDITORS – my favorite (sounds kinda like Interpol)

Also, I don’t know much about them but here are some more:
Maximo Park
Dirty Pretty Things
Forward Russia
The Maccabees
Little Man Tate
The Futureheads
Kaiser Chiefs

Mclusky.

They broke up 3 years ago, but they left some good music behind them.

Foals!

I’ll also echo support for Nine Black Alps.

I assume by British, you mean UK. pardon if you don’t. :)

Los Campesinos! (Wales)
Camera Obscura (Scotland)
Alfie (England)
The Boy Least Likely To (England)
Johnny Foreigner (England)
Dogs Die In Hot Cars (Scotland, broke up a year or two back)
and for classics try Orange Juice or Television. Maybe Aztec Camera?

Dogs Die in Hot Cars broke up? Aw, man! I liked them. You know what other cool Scottish band broke up that I loved dearly?

Beta Band.

Mcfly is kinda good

vindice's avatar

The Beta Band is excellent and for the most part=The Aliens and King Biscuit Time but very psych.

McLusky is a great call. Such a tremendous band.

@aprilsimnel Yeah they broke up. But you should hear what they did for the “incomplete” album they were recording. They released the bits and pieces of what they had to the fans, let them toy with the components, remix, etc. and then picked the best ones and released the fan produced stuff as an album.plus the fans get some of the royalties to boot. Go to their website!

beta band is cool, but i only liked a few of their songs. it doesn’t really fit with the tone of the Kooks, etc. but if you’re looking for spacey stuff, i’m always up for Spiritualized. amazing amazing amazing.

I have that Cornelius album what’s your avatar, vindice!

Mother & The Addicts any good? I hear they’re kind of Arctic Monkeys-like.

“I will now sell five copies of ‘The Threes EP’ by the Beta Band.”

And people have definitely mentioned a lot of good stuff. Maybe look at Mikrofisch?

tennesseejac's avatar

@TitsMcGhee : excellent quote. Sub-question: is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins, is it better to burn out or fade away?

TitsMcGhee's avatar

@tennesseejac: I’m of the opinion that an artist is really the summation of his work, and it’s always better to just let it go when it just isn’t happening anymore, but there are some who can be forgiven (ie paul mccartney on his own, not always so good, the beatles, however, were beyond brilliant).

While I am not a big fan of his ambient The Fireman side project, it’s great that Paul’s not stopped experimenting. RESPEK!

My fellow Americans: BBC’s 6Music is awesome for hearing indie British bands we won’t hear about in the States for months yet, if ever. And seriously, does anyone trust NME anymore? I know I don’t. Steve LaMacq is taking up the indie British rock mantle of the late and very great John Peel to good effort. Plus, he’s a person over 25, as am I, who still likes to hear new rock music.

@TitsMcGhee : I can think of a few more that should probably be “forgiven” :

Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Frank Sinatra, and John Fogerty

All of these guys went thru a decade or so long drought (when it just “wasn’t happening anymore”) as far as their quality of work goes, but eventually made a “comeback”

Im glad they didn’t give up

TitsMcGhee's avatar

@tennesseejac: Totally agreed…. although Brian Wilson was on the edge there, haha.

zarnold's avatar

@lizarrrd: me too. I LOVE the kooks! Konk was probably my favorite album of last year. Probably a few repeats in here, here are some Kooks-esque bands that are also pretty sweet: The Wombats, Razorlight, Teenage Fanclub, We Are Scientists, The Pigeon Detectives

TitsMcGhee's avatar

@zarnold: I LOVE THE PIGEON DETECTIVES! And no one else even knows who they are!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@zarnold We Are Scientists aren’t british. but they aren’t bad either.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

the dirty pretty things and the libertines and babyshambles are musts. my favourite of the 3 are the libertines, but the other 2 are great ‘spin off’ bands, i guess.

luthrrrr's avatar

these are some brilliant answers ;)
the pigeon detectives, the wombats, libertines, the kooks, mclusky; i love ‘em all and agree whole-heartedly…though they’re not really indie, the horrors are really good : )

Mumford and Sons are pretty good, their music is all acoustic.I
