Stalker…
just kidding.
Mexican food? In Boston? Taco Bell….
If it’s considered ‘Mexican’.

My town Hammonton NJ is the blueberry capital of the world. Who do you think picks all those blueberries? MEXICANS!!! So theres quite a few good mexican places around me. The one i love the most though is called Fiesta Mexicana, great place with really low prices. It was just recently featured in the “Best of Philly” which i find odd since well, we arent in philly lol. But well worth going to if your ever in the area.

PupnTaco's avatar

Best place I know of within an hour of here is Olamendi’s in San Clemente. Nixon used to eat there, for what it’s worth.

ark_a_dong's avatar

Unfortunately, due to lack of alternatives, Taco Bell. :(

dynamicduo's avatar

Taco Cabana. It’s down in some parts of Texas and probably elsewhere. It’s the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. So damn delicious. In fact, I brought home a fresh delicious meal of it on the plane all the way back to Canada to share with my family (back before the current security theatre shenanigans going on). Shame I’m all the way here in Canada and there’s no hope of getting any really great Mexican food…

The best place to go in Illinois is O’ Hare airport.

buy a ticket to Mexico and eat anywhere when you arrive

benchaos's avatar

Minneapolis, MN—whether it’s super late, or you just need some great Queso Dip: Little Tijuana.

laureth's avatar

For the best in Ypsilanti, Michigan, go to La Fiesta Mexicana.

For the (second) best, but more accessible and Americanized, go to Tio’s.

middlesex county NJ = NEW BRUNSWICK, cinco de mayo

Hamden, CT: Aunt Chilada’s. I don’t think any actual Mexicans are involved but the food is absolutely delicious. If you can handle really hot food, get the habanero pasta. It is delicious, but it sticks with you for a few days, so clear your calendar if you’ve got weak bowels. Come to think of it, if you have strong bowels, be prepared.

charliecompany34's avatar

wow, i am putting these joints in my database of places to eat when traveling! i love mexican or tex-mex dishes!

jamzzy's avatar

i work at On The Border, Tex-Mex chain restaurant…its just not the same

charliecompany34's avatar

taco bell? what the hell? taco hell?

no, the authentic joints…

Davis, Cal. – This place called Guadalajara. It’s so good that the family that owns it opened a second one across town. God prices, good portions, and good food.
Mmmmmm..Chipotle. It’s good and yes it’s a burrito, but is it really Mexican food?

Bluefreedom's avatar

If you ever visit Phoenix, Arizona, you’re going to want to visit Carlos O’Briens, Valle Luna, and Carolina’s for very good Mexican food.

charliecompany34's avatar

@Bluefreedom yes, i know carlos obriens! uh, always intrigued by the ethnic name discrepancies but who cares. mexican? irish? ok, whatever—good food!

TheBox193's avatar

Wait? Are you behind me!?

I would recomend:
Mixteca
El Niagra

Bluefreedom's avatar

@charliecompany34. I know exactly what you mean. When someone first told me to go there, I thought, with a name like that it’s got to be pretty mediocre. I couldn’t believe how big the portions were and how good the food was when I first ate there. I’ve never regretted it.

qualitycontrol's avatar

If you ever venture to boston there are many authentic restaraunts in east Boston and Chelsea. Mostly are el salvadorian restaraunts which is closest to Mexican you’ll get. My favorites are Cancun Taqueria and El santa neco. There are mexican places but I’ve never been. Taco bell is NOT real food, neither are places like tequila’s or tex mex. If you want real carne asada or pupusa con chimol and tortillas do yourself a favor and go to one of the smaller places. Chains are garbage.

charliecompany34's avatar

@qualitycontrol i concur. we have joints in chicago that are homey and authentic. these places cook mexican fare like it’s supposed to be enjoyed. no extra sauce or seasoning. no fries. RICE AND BEANS. no coke or pepsi. RICE MILK. you know what i’m saying?

laureth's avatar

Yes. Horchata. It’s yum. :)

RandomMrdan's avatar

Chipotle, Taco Bell, El Vaquero to name a few…I know there are a couple others, but those are the ones that come to me immediately.

Edit: Columbus, Ohio

PupnTaco's avatar

Chipotle is pretty good but the mom & pops will always win out.

Most Mexican here in NYC is Southern Mexican, mainly from Puebla.

Manhattan: Wait ‘til sundown and go to the Mexican food truck on 14th Street and 8th Avenue.

Brooklyn: Tacos Matamoros on 5th Ave. & 47th St. in Sunset Park

Queens: Taqueria Coatzingo on Roosevelt near 76th St. (7 train to Roosevelt Avenue)

Bronx: Real Azteca on 163rd Street just west of Southern Blvd. (6 train to Hunts Point)

Staten Island: Los Lobos at 140 New Dorp Lane. You’ll need a car.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

I just have to clarify that chipotle and taco bell are not mexican. they’re just not. they’re american food. just like “french fries” from mcdonald’s are not french.

@dynamicduo, I like Taco Cabana a lot too, but I don’t think it’s as good as Chaco’s or Ninfa’s. I don’t know what part of Texas you’re you’ve been to though. That’s Houston.

In Nashville, TN we usually go to Cancun or On the Boarder. Those aren’t bad, but my favorite favorite place is San Antonio Taco Company, which is obviously the Tejano kind of Mejicano, but when that’s what I’m craving that is just plain okay with me. If you’re talking about getting a Mexican food fix, that is the spot. The food is so delicious it’s like a drug. You have to go to the one in the village though. The one downtown has just never been as tasty. I’m not sure why. It’s a shame because I think it has the better service.

When in Sacramento dine at Ernesto’s.

Mi Ranchito- Best Mexican food I ever had. Back home in St. Louis. In NY, I like Mexicana Mama.

@90s_kid: you really need to get out more, or do more research before you offer bad advice.

In the Boston area: find an Anna’s Taqueria. There’s one in Davis Square, one in Porter Square, and at least one more, somewhere near BC, I think. It’s a burrito shop, but it’s very good, and given the clientele I usually see, I’d wager it’s pretty authentic too.

There’s also Tacos Lupita, on Elm Street near Porter Square.

Harvard Square has the Border CafĂ© that I’ve heard about but never been to.

90s_kid's avatar

Excuse me for not going to Mexican Food Joints…And I don’t want to use this as an excuse often because it really isn’t a good one, but I am 14 and Boston is big. Sure, not nearly as big as the apple, but I may live in a totally different part of Boston!
And If you hate it so much, consider having a word with ark a dong. no offense ark a dong

I hope you’re not saying that to me.

@90’s: people have been telling you this for weeks. Remember?

Anyway, in Olympia WA we have a mini-chain called El Sarape, all of versions
excellent in a heavy-on-the-melted-cheese kind of way, good undemanding
comfort food, and nice to be in there because the staff is always speaking Spanish
so you can practice in your shy way and they tolerate it. But the best 2 places
around here are the taco wagon that parks on Harrison near Division on the west side
and then moves over near Plum Street part of the day, and La Tarasca in Chehalis,
run by the Alcala family, no melted cheese whatever. And you can get
horchata and also tamarindo. And hot-hot carrot-pickle appetizers instead of chips. mm,
Michoacan, mi amor.

susanc's avatar

In Seattle, Tacos Guaymas on Broadway very near Madison. I think there’s another one
somewhere else in the city. The bad thing about Tacos Guaymas is that the torta de lengua is always put in the micro so that the crusty bread gets gummy; they will not
listen when you ask for it not to happen. Get the “wet burrito”. Omg. It weighs about three pounds.
And a Modelo Negra.
And they have truly interesting murals, not tacky. Well, a little tacky.

cwilbur's avatar

@90s_kid: so you’re 14, you don’t get out much, you have no idea where the good Mexican food is—then why the @#$% do you recommend Taco Bell? Are you just speaking to hear yourself make noise?

That gets old fast, and it drastically increases the likelihood of people thinking to themselves “oh, it’s that 90s_kid again, what an ignorant twit.” If you notice, the people that are really looked up to around here only speak when they have something to say.

AstroChuck's avatar

Except for me, of course.

90s_kid's avatar

I’m doing my best to help. Sure, barely helpful, but on topic :).

cwilbur's avatar

It’s not just barely helpful, it’s anti-helpful. If that’s the best you can do to help, you would do better to remain silent.

90s_kid's avatar

Yeah you better remain silent for your sake, too!

When in IL, you’ll have to come to my house, but call ahead with your order, my recipes are made from scratch and take a couple days to prepare. Oh, and bring wine or really good beer. just a note, any beer you can buy in a can is not good. You’ll need it to wash down the chilis.

The regular Mexican food places around here use far too much grease and fillers.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

That’s why I love richardhenry, he is such the peacemaker. It makes me want to tousle his hair and give him a pat on the head. I think I am in love with him.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@90s_kid, that seems to be a rather personal question. I refuse to answer on the grounds that it is really none of your business. And to mistakenly equate love with sex only goes to show your obvious inexperience with the subtler emotions. I’m sure you’ll grow out of it someday, we all do eventually. :-)

AstroChuck's avatar

@epz- You mean to say that love and lust aren’t the same thing?

Well I’ll be.

Just wondering if you were gay…

cwilbur's avatar

@90s_kid, yes, we successfully decoded your ideogram. Asking it in text is no less rude and inappropriately personal than asking it in ideograms.

As we were saying…

There is a Guadalajara’s in Aurora, a suburb of Denver. Great tasting, authentic (as far as I know) and well seasoned.

Contrary to rumor, good Mexican food is not necessarily hot. Sometimes too much hot can cover the flavor. Sure there are times and dishes where hotter is better, and I have won my share of hot pepper eating contests and bets, but there are just some dishes that have such subtle notes of flavor and aroma that too much hot would cover it up. A good example of that, IMHO, is a chocolate mole (pronounced mo – lay). When I first discovered this sauce, I sounded as incongruous as chocolate gravy, but when I tasted it, as part of a chicken mole, it was as if I had found chicken heaven.

rahm_sahriv's avatar

You are in, probably the whitest state in the Union. You will not find authentic, good Mexican food here. There is always Margarita’s but that is over the top in decoration, music and you have to put up with loud, obnoxious drunken college kids. The food is pretty much sub-par anyway. So, if you are up here, tough luck. Go south or make it at home.
