Are you telling me the best we could come up with is "de-plane-ing"?

Asked by JonnyCeltics (2721points) January 22nd, 2009

You board a plane, its called “boarding;” you get off of a plane, it’s called “de-plane-ing (no idea even how to write it).” HELLOOOOOOOO!?!?!? Suggestions? There must be a better word!

unboard, deboard? ugh

There’s also “debark” and “alight”.

Specifically, I am talking about getting off the plane. So not as the plane takes off, leaves the gates, none of that.

All of the words I’ve mentioned mean to get off of a plane or other vehicle.

How about.. drumroll….......................... exit?

@aidje
If someone ever says “alight” to me, they will automatically get punched in the nose.

@Vinifera7 – Hey, I’m just answering the question. :-)

I’d say I disembark, but not that I disembark a plane; that is, it’s intransitive. So it’s not truly the opposite of “board.”

If I had to write “deplaning,” that’s how I’d spell it.

Well, here’s an essay about the word, in which the author suggests that “disembark” or “leave the plane” are perfectly good.

How about if people were ‘spurted’ off a plane.
