What inexpensive gifts to take?

Asked by mij (691points) January 23rd, 2009

I’m off beginning of February to visit my daughter in laws muslim family and village in West Java, Indonesia.
My religion is nature, you know, the sun comes up and the sun goes down… that sort of thing…
We can take school materials to give out to children and cosmetics, face cream and stuff for the ladies… they also love big red juicy apples and dried fruit.
Any ideas team.

Crayolas are a universal currency for kids.

Re: “big red juicy apples and dried fruit”: Many nations do not let you bring produce or other foods in from outside. Or, I guess that you could buy then upon arrival….

Hello, fellow pagan! Have you considered taking them something recycled and or recyclable, reusable? Paper, a pretty journal, like that? Small mirrors? Art supplies? (I like the crayons idea, too — but see if you can’t get some made of soy instead of paraffin.)

How about reusable grocery totes? (I used such totes as Christmas wrapping this year; I bought a bunch of both plain and insulated recycled-material totes at the Commissary on the local military base — lucky for me they were all dark green — and the total was less than I’ve spent on wrapping paper in the past and much less time-consuming than making my own. Then I added lovely lengths of ribbon (also reusable) to decorate each one individually. No wrapping to throw away, and a bag to take home your gifts in!) Fill each one with gifts… maybe fabrics, thread, needles, etc.; a Rubik’s Cube; a Hobermann Sphere; a wonderful toy ball globe; a star finder; a set of stone chisels or files.

You have a great opportunity here to leave an impression — of Americans (I assume) and of our culture and our goods, not to mention your thoughtfulness. If you’ve been there before, you have some idea what they need and enjoy; but either way, what a lovely challenge!

I envy you, and I send you my blessings. Safe journey!

Angelina Jolie…Well, She may not be that inexpensive though.
So, my next suggestion would be Books!
Books on how to learn the English Language.
