Does anyone know of a website that would let me view average traffic for specific times in a big city?

Asked by Perchik (4992points) January 26th, 2009

I have to go into Charlotte tomorrow evening and I’m trying to get an idea of how much traffic to expect/how much of an early start to give myself. The free parking where I’m going doesn’t open until 6, so getting there too early is not good. I’m sure there has to be a website that has this kind of data, especially with all the traffic servers out there. If this doesn’t exist yet, can one of you other web developers work on building a good traffic map? mmkthxbai

sigalert.com gives you real time traffic info.

Yeah I’ve found a bunch with “real time.” I’m looking for… unreal time? haha I want something that shows average traffic patterns for an arbitrary day/time. For example, right now (11pm Monday night) I want to look at what the typical Tuesday 5–6Pm traffic might look like.

Not sure if Charlotte is included, but hopstop.com has approximate travel times from point A to point B, and accounts for traffic (although it is centered around public transit…)

TDOT.com shows you traffic pictures from various cameras on exits around Nashville Tennessee. Its really useful to check them out if your commuting out of Nashville after work in the afternoons because you can avoid traffic tangles. So my dad drives and another employee has an I-phone. We check them on the way home everyday.

You can do this with Google Maps. Click on the traffic tab, then there’s a link to refine it to a specific date and time based on previous data’s averages.

@spargett Perfect!! Somehow I missed that when I looked at Google Maps

Google Maps will also give you approximate times when you request directions from point A to point B. For example, one trip I looked up on Google Maps just yesterday stated:

32.2 mi – about 41 mins (up to 1 hour 10 mins in traffic)

@Perchik Is that what you’re looking for?
