I work for IT inside of an Engineering Consulting firm. I love my job, I’m such a nerd. I fix and program PDA’s.

I’m a nanny. I am proud of it, as I think I am pretty darn good at it. However, I always feel uncomfortable telling people I’m a nanny. I always add in that I’m also a full time grad student (kind of like how I’m adding it in now!). I LOVE my job. I love the kiddos I care for, I love my bosses, and I love my day to day routine. I especially love knowing I’m having a hopefully positive impact on some great children.

I’m a military policeman in the Air Force (Air National Guard) which are referred to as Security Forces. I am very proud of my career, the military in general (we have the best one in the world), and proud of the United States too.

Between my time in the Army military police corps and the Air Force Security Forces, I’ve been doing this for over 20 years now so that would be a definite ‘yes’ to loving my career in the armed forces.

I used to be a museum curator, which was a job I liked very much. Now I am an internet bookseller, but my son says my job title is “sitting on your big fat ass in front of the computer all day.” He says that because I have refused to buy him a Playstation since he threw his xBox down the stairs.

@Darwin maybe he needs a book on anger management.

What counts as success?

I’m a kind of research consultant in a university. I love helping my clients. I hate the administrative work. I like some of the results of the administrative work. I’m glad I have graduate students to do the work for me, because nothing would get done, otherwise.

I am capable of teaching and planning and telling people what to do. I am no longer capable of doing drudge work, or of thinking about the long term future, or of reaching out to people I don’t know. This is not a good thing, and I feel guilty about not doing shit, especially in these times. I think I’ve been there too long. But now is not the time to try to change.

I’m unemployed and proud of it. (j/k)
I quit my teaching jobs over Christmas for family reasons. I really like teaching, especially to older students, preparing them for exams and so on. I get good results, and I guess what I like about it is the fairly instant gratification. You work for a few months and then your students sit for exams and a couple of months after that you can tell if you’ve done a good job based on their results. When I was teaching kids I had to wait for a decade before I found out whether I’d made any difference in their lives.

A decade or so ago I had a mini-career as a rock singer. I was quite successful in that I sang whatever I liked without having to make compromises, and people loved it and I got loads of money from it. I quit when I decided to have a family. I made 7 albums, one of which did pretty well in the charts. And I had lots of fun playing music with some amazing people. Nowadays I just jam for fun, or do the odd guest appearance here and there.

My next artistic endeavour will be to write a children’s book and maybe make a low-budget sitcom for the local TV. And I am already in a theatre group. If anything, I have the time right now.

oh gosh, I should have shut up. Ok, look, for those of you who thought I was Michael Jackson or Sting or someone:

I am not that famous, so even if I tell you my name, you will never have heard of it. I had a minor hit in England in the 90s. And I had a wonderful time in Germany singing in pubs and festivals for several years. People liked my music, but did not know much about my private life, which I consider to be the real success. And I sang my favourite songs.

ok so this is me if you really insist:

Boy! Candy’s got a pretty good ear!

what language was that?

Jack79's avatar

that was Greek though she also speaks English, Polish and German. It’s her favourite song. And she’s much older and better now, though she seems to like dancing more than singing.

wundayatta's avatar

How much older? What style of dancing? My kids loved to play with my instruments when they were two, also. However, I wasn’t exactly anxious to have them do so. My daughter was ok, but my son managed to break all of my pottery drums. Sigh. We glued them back together, but it isn’t the same.

I have them both learning piano (kind of hard to break, although it is doable). My daughter is also learning voice. But she’ll never sing in front of me. Sigh, again.

Jack79's avatar

well this is not relevant to the thread, but Candy is now almost 4 and likes ballet dancing. She is not with me at the moment so she doesn’t dance. Or do anything much actually. But I hope all this will change soon.
