What should I do while in San Diego?

Asked by syz (35938points) October 2nd, 2007

I have a conference coming up in October and will spend 9 days in San Diego – I know about the zoo and the wild animal park – any insider tips on what I should do or see while in town?

I have traveled all over the world and this is one of my favorite cities to visit. The harbor area near downtown and the gas lamp district are the best areas for shopping and dining. Great restaurants there. Point Loma is the best senic place there, a point that looks out across the city and the ocean. Coronado is only a short ferry ride away and and is a pretty place with unique shops and restaurants too. The best tourist destination is the zoo. I am not a zoo person, went to see what the fuss was all about and I was blown away. It really is amazing.

If you like to ride a bike, biking is a great way to see the city. I biked to all the places above, plus La Jolla Beach in one day. It is a very bike friendly city and there are many places to rent a bike that will bring one right to your hotel room.

I second pwyatt for the gaslamp district.

You could also do SeaWorld if you’re into that kind of thing.

SeaWorld is kind of like whale jail—it’s a little depressing. Birch Aquarium in La Jolla is a much better experience (and it actually does meaningful science). It’s also less expensive than SeaWorld, and parking is free.

Also—if you’re staying in a place close to a station, taking the Coaster or Trolley to get places is fun and generally easier than driving (though it takes a little longer).

I nominate thirdly on Pwyatt. It is one of my favorite cities to visit.

Also drive along The old 101 hwy instead of hwy 5 for a few hours. You can see beachtowns of Del Mar all the way up to Carlsbad. A beautiful drive. Try to catch a sunset along this route.

Little Italy..have nice shops/places to walk around as well.

Love the brunch at the restaurant at Hotel Coronado hotel with views of the ocean.

LaJolla is nice to walk around as well.

Have a great trip!

This is great breakfast in La Jolla. Been there twice. I had the eggs benedict. Hubby and a friend had something else. All are outstanding. No wonder, it was voted best breakfast in some awards. Now I am hungry. LOL

I HIGHLY recommend the USS Midway Museum. They give you a headset and an audio player thats take you through a very detailed tour of the entire legendary air craft carrier. It tale about three hours and is only $15.00. It’s well worth it.

There is also a flight simulator, that is an additional admission.
