What is boxee?

Asked by St.George (5865points) January 28th, 2009

Not the girl who makes the youtube videos, but the service. Do you like it? What purpose does it serve? Why would one choose to use it? Any info appreciated.

If your talking about Boxee the multimedia site with movies, tv shows, flickr, etc. I have signed up for something similar in the past, I felt it had a very limited selection from what seems to be promised while signing up. It is good if your into watching things on a web browser format instead of a legit file. I found it rather useless because I can access all those shows/movies via a regular TV.

It tries to add a social networking layer to media consumption. I haven’t had much luck with it personally. I couldn’t even get it to play a DVD.

“Not the girl that makes youtube videos,” hahahaha.
I’ve installed it on my tv, but the remote infuriates me so much I haven’t had much chance to play with it. If you can really watch hulu on your tv (as it advertises) and from other sources I would be very happy.

Lifehacker just posted a more in-depth article explaining what Boxee is and how to install it on an Apple TV.

So if I don’t have apple tv it’s useless to me, yes?

No you can also install it on any Mac such as a Macbook or Mac Mini, also any Linux computer, and there is a private beta for a Windows version right now as well.

Boxes is a media center application based on XBMC for coralling all your media (movies, music, video, etc) into one place. Boxee has a much stronger net video focus than XBMC (at the moment, at least) and provides simple access to Hulu, CBS, ABC, YouTube, and others.

I just revised my media setup and evaluated all the options available but decided against Boxee. I chose Plex, which is another Mac-centric branch of XBMC, along with MythTV for TV recording. I found the net video content on Boxes to be pretty lame (IMHO). It’s mostly really old TV shows and lame movies. I also really hate how all the content is divided up into fake “channels” like Hulu, ABC, etc.

On the other side, Plex doesn’t have all the net video options of Boxee, but it does have excellent iLife integration so that from my TV, I can access all my iPhoto and iTunes libraries from my other computers around the house, as well as videos and recordings from my Linux media server.
