Is Obama right about wall street bankers?

Asked by mij (691points) January 29th, 2009

Just heard President Obama speaking on local FM radio here in sunny Western Australia.
About how the wall street bankers still managed to give themselves millions of dollars even though they knew the banks were heading into deep manure.
He say’s he wasn’t impressed as the Govt was using public funds to prop up the bankers, and they kept taking their bonuses. that’s being a wee bit greedy I’d say, spare a thought for the poor people who are doing it tough… Good on you Obama I say, I like the cut of your jib… Hope our PM is following your style.
I feel the future is looking brighter with Obama at the big desk…
I’m sending him good vibes and bad Karma to your bankers…

I’m with you, except it’s billions, and not millions.

I think he’s dead on the money. Selfish bastards! Thanks for wishing us well from your perch in Australia :)

I was laid off from an investment bank last autumn where I worked as a night admin. Managing directors were heading out the door with their things same as I and the analysts were. So even Wall Streeters on the very top didn’t care about their MDs or VPs below them any more than they did the analysts or the admins and other support staff. I hope these laid off bankers remember that, and the bonuses the CEOs took for themselves.

Thanks for the good vibes to our new Pres. I find it completely reprehensible that banks will give out billions in bonuses to the Sam people who got us into this mess. If you don’t need government money to weather this storm, you’re free to give away money however you see fit. Otherwise, don’t come begging for a handout just to turn around and spend it on a ski chalet in Aspen.

Yup, I cite the following:

Kevin Connolly: Unemployment in the United States has risen again. It went up by one when John Thain the CEO of Merrill Lynch departed shortly after the loss-making financial group was absorbed by Bank Of America. It has emerged in the last few days that Mr Thain spent more than a million dollars re-decorating his office – and paid the interior designer Michael Smith $800,000 to get it looking just the way he wanted. That’s apparently eight times what Mr Smith is being paid to makeover the White House for the Obamas. My favourite item on Mr Thain’s shopping list – which has a flavour of decadence you’d associated with early Elvis or one of the later Roman Emperors – is a waste bin that cost $1,400 (£1,000). Look out for a more austere, chastened version of capitalism in the coming months (and maybe years) of recession.

7 years ago I was let go by a guy who said do me “My wife has wanted to extend our back deck for years what am I supposed to tell her?” He lives in a mansion on a private golf course. He said this knowing I had my first born on the way, knowing he had lied to me to keep me from taking another job, and knowing he was stealing money from the company and his employees for which he was and is under federal investigation for tax evasion, but never lost his job or income or life style.

i’m glad obama gave these greedy bastards a dressing down. our taxes are paying for them to have bonuses. today on the today show they pointed out that bonuses are actually down 44% this year, but still it’s out of hand and they shouldn’t be asking for a handout and simultaneously giving out bonuses. the big shots should go a year or two without a bonus, they already make boo-koo bucks. today show also pointed out that they have to give bonuses to keep the talent. well fine but don’t ask for bailout from taxpayers like us who work hard to make $30,000, $50,000, $70,000.
