Anything I just have to do in NYC from 2/8-2/11?

Asked by testtoast99 (80points) February 2nd, 2009

I am a San Franciscan heading to NYC for three days next week and am curious for recommendations of anything I just must see or do or experience. I have been to the city a half dozen times before, but can never keep up with the latest and greatest stuff to check out. Anything weird? Wonderful? Tasty? Did you have a particularly memorable moment on a recent trip? Suggestions can range from free to pricey and outdoors or inside. Huge thanks in advance. I love you Flutherers!

You could always try this: 17th annual Hot Chocolate Festival at City Bakery in the Flatiron District. For each day of the month, they’ll have a different flavor of hot chocolate.

yummy goodness

If you get up before 7 am, why not go to Rockefeller Center and be seen on the “Today Show”? They might even have a musical guest that day.

Crif Dog in east village.
Hot dogs :-)

@blondie411 – City Bakery is awesome anyway, innit?

To see a cool chocolate place, there are Jacques Torres factories in Tribeca and DUMBO where you can see the chocolates being made. It smells so good in there!

The Westminster Dog Show is going on at Madison Square Garden while you’re here.

St. John the Divine is a lovely place and has tours. There’s a Keith Haring triptych that is just beautiful.

Go to ASSSSCAT3000 at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade on Sunday night. The 7:00pm show is $10 and the 8:30 show is free, and the queue for tickets to the latter show is redonk.

mmmm Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn (DUMBO), great pizza, great views as well. Walk to the waterfront, their is an ice cream shop there that is great. Great picture spot of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge and across the East River into Manhattan Might be a line outside!

See a Broadway show and support that. they’re dying because of the economy.
Go to Sardi’s.
the classic NYC stuff i suppose.
go to Virgin Times Square before it closes, maybe?

You should celebrate my birthday!! (it’s on the 8th!) A great for you to do so would be to visit MoMA and then indulge your sweet tooth at Dylan’s Candy Bar! I believe you will enjoy yourself! :D

Jekyll and Hydes on 6th Ave, not 7th.
FAO Schwarts.
St. Patricks Cathedral.
Walk in Central Park (this time of the year it’s wonderful)
Eat a dirty water hotdog.
Window Shop down 5th Ave.
Stop into Macy’s.
Check out the M&M store and prepare to want chocolate more than ever.

Actually, stay away from the hot dog vendors (unless they wear plastic gloves). NY mothers teach their NY babies that “those guys go to bathroom between cars then don’t wash their hands”.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chelseababyy I wasn’t very pleased with Jekyll and Hydes last time I went. I went when they first opened, and it was awesome. But the last time I went, everything was a bit tired and they charged an “entertainment fee” – which was new.

also, if you go to St. Patrick’s, you need to go to 30 Rock and skate or at least walk around.

chelseababyy's avatar

@eponymoushipster I’ve been there a few times, I went this past December and it was great.. Maybe that time was just lame :/

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chelseababyy yeah, perhaps that’s it. Is that Mars 2022 or whatever restaurant open still? it’s in a similar vein to J&H.

Mr_M's avatar

It’s Mars 2112 and they have a website and I thought it was kinda “kiddie”. In order to get to the restaurant you first get into a “Disney-like” rocket ship ride to Mars. Then you get out and you’re on Mars. Food was also nothing to write home about. It’s right across the street from the Winter Garden Theater so you might want to see what’s going on there, too.

Better to look up the “Russian Tea Room” restaurant. They have a website, too.

I enjoyed J&H.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@Mr_M Along the lines of The Russian Tea Room, try Firebird. it’s on 46th, along Restaurant Row. AMAZING food. and i had cherries jubilee for dessert!

Mr_M's avatar

Thanks! I will check it out. Of course he can go to the most expensive restaurant in NY called “The Four Seasons”. It’s one of those restaurants where the lady’s menu doesn’t have prices.

eponymoushipster's avatar

haha. Or Papaya’s, for the other end of the spectrum… :)

chelseababyy's avatar

@eponymoushipster HELLS YES Mars 2112 is still open!!! Hahahahha that place is a riot. I remember my little cousin said something to me about the bulge in the aliens pants cuz his tights were soooo tight.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chelseababyy how little is little (your cousin, not the bulge)? i’ve never been there – always sounded kinda cheesy, but this is making me want to take a looksy.

do they come around and irritate you like at J&H? more importantly, do they hide the bathrooms?

chelseababyy's avatar

@eponymoushipster she was nine when we went.
Hahahah they DO come around and bother you, but not as bad as J&H, though that’s what I LOVE about J&H. The aliens at Mars 2112 just like walk up to you, I don’t remember them talking, but the one kept coming near me and would touch my shoulders and my hair, kinda creepy.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chelseababyy yeah, we had a “mad scientist” at J&H who had an unusual interest in my large-chested female friend. very odd.

i’ll tell you what though: they don’t know what to do when you have a come back to their schtick.

chelseababyy's avatar

@eponymoushipster you’re right. One of the women who worked at J&H tried to take my little sister and wanted her to give some random person dirty looks for being a smartass, was slightly funny. I would totally love to work there. That’s for sure.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chelseababyy well if misdemeanor assault is your thing, it’s probably a gold mine. i wonder what level of background check they do on the “talent”.

chelseababyy's avatar

@eponymoushipster I’m not sure. But I have a little bit of experience in the acting/snotty dept. I played Hilary Van Duren in my H.S’s rendition of Fame. Ha.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chelseababyy honestly, haven’t seen Fame in probably 20+ years, but i’ll take your word for it. :)

chelseababyy's avatar

@eponymoushipster well go watch it! Sheesh, it’s good stuff.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@chelseababyy okokok. honestly, all i remember was the lady banging the bat on the floor. kinda scares me.

blondie411's avatar

@aprilsimnel I am thinking of going to City Bakery just for the mystery flavor of the last night! I’ve also been to Max Brenner’s in Union Square, their hot chocolate was very good as was some of their sweet treats!

aprilsimnel's avatar

I’m not in the city often enough these days, so I’ve not been to see Max. I’ve heard that that’s some good cocoa over there.

Has anyone been to The Bell House in Brooklyn yet?
