What should i do about litter box training my ferret?

Asked by tocutetolive90 (888points) February 5th, 2009

She has learned to go in the cats litter box. But in her cage she will go in her litter box, but she goes once and then in the other corner and then back to litter box. She changes each time. I just got her a few days ago.

You should put one wherever a ferret chooses to go.
It’s really the best way. We always had one more litter box than ferrets, same rule as cats.

i only have one ferret. there’s one in her cage. but i put it in the one corner cause she went there, but whenever i move it she goes in the opposite corner if she already went in her littler box. lol. She cant go in the same place more then once. lol

Right, put one where she goes next.
She should have two.

You can’t move litter boxes when you’re training. It’s a terrible idea.

I keep in the one place, but she keeps changing

You need more than one litter box.

tocutetolive90's avatar

i will get another

but that doesn’t really help with the training cause then she might go in the middle, like she did today.

I think you should get a few books on ferrets as pets and their behaviors. That’s unlikely to happen. One ferret will always need multiple places for litter boxes as far from their food source as possible. I’ve had many ferrets and this is a pretty basic rule, Ferret 101 if you will.

Buy a few ferret books, read them in full.

i know they need multi. littler boxes. I have read books. She just likes doing things different, that’s why im asking. thanks anyway

She’s a ferret, if you knew they needed multiple boxes, but think she’s special enough to do with just one even though it’s not working. Why bother asking? She’s not doing anything different. It’s entirely normal behavior to a cage that isn’t set up properly.

I gave you all the information you needed, so never mind the tone of you thank you, I’ll pretend it was sincere. You’re welcome.

So i get her two litter boxes that still doesn’t help me getting her too use them. That’s all i was asking

I already answered that. She already knows to use them, the set up isn’t sufficient. Get her more, experiment a bit and it’ll pan out.

tocutetolive90's avatar

she didn’t use one in the store. shes only 2 months old. in the store they went in the cage cause they didn’t fill the one littler box they had for the three of them

Again, I suggest reading more books on ferrets, this is chapter two of any of them. I’ve already told you everything you need. So, I’m excusing myself from this thread.

haha, I found this thread rather comical.

I second multiple litter boxes.

tocutetolive90's avatar

lol. ya I’m going too tm. her knew thing is to move where the litter boxes are even if they are attached to the wall. lol

our ferret goes shortly after waking up so we wake her up wait her her to do her duty and when she backs up into a place where she doesn’t have a litter box we move her so she knows where she should be. then she gets a treat. now the real problem is trying to get her to stop trying to hit the box from the second floor.

also note that it’s hard, if not impossible to train a ferret to use a litter box. don’t worry if you never train it as they are not built that way.

ok. thanks so much for the help
