Is Big Brother watching me?

Asked by AlfredaPrufrock (9394points) February 8th, 2009

I was watching the History Channel earlier this evening, when all of a sudden the television switched to the Discovery Channel as the “Science of Sex Appeal” came on. When I tried to switch back to the History Channel, the television wouldn’t let me. I got a message on the screen that said my VCR was recording the program and I couldn’t switch channels. When the show was over, a message popped up and said the recording was finished. Then, the television switched back to the History Channel on its own. I would say someone in the household programmed the show to record, but there isn’t a VCR attached to the television, only a DVD player, and it 1) doesn’t record and 2) has been unplugged for about a month.

It was an awesome show, and I don’t mind being held captive and watching it. It actually provided some interesting information about attraction and behavior based on body chemistry, and I recommend watching it. But what’s up with my television? No one knows how to program anything on the television. We don’t have TiVo, only regular cable service.

That is really really weird.

I have no idea if this is related, but we used to have an older TV, and it began to switch the channels and turn itself off randomly, (and other very odd things). We found out that about the same time it started was when our next-door-neighbor bought a new TV and put it in a room in his house that was at the absolute closest point to the TV room in our house. We realized that his remote was so powerful, (and it was on the same signal as ours?) that his remote control was controlling our TV.
Your thing could possibly be something like that.

it sounds like you just had a weird problem with your cable provider, I don’t think big brother had anything to do with that….but I do think Big Brother is watching…*looks around suspiciously…

The cable company records every show you watch if you have a digital box (which is two way). Seems like a short step to forcing us to watch shows . . .

Yes, always.
Be afraid.

Very strange. I doubt if the government has taken over your cable, but always know that the eyes of big brother are upon you, watching and waiting. I only hope there was nothing going on involving your hands and another part of your body. They know what you were doing and will use it against you for their own nefarious purposes.

He is watching you…but he’s trying to change the channel.

It sounds like a perfectly normal function of the cable box. Before I had DVR service, I was able to set the cable box to “Record” certain programs right through the digital guide.

This forces the cable channel to switch to the show so that you can set a VCR timer to record at the same time. Try pulling up your guide and selecting the options for a program.

The real question is, who set it and are they sending you a message?

But that doesn’t mean that AstroChuck isn’t reading your mail…

@fireside, I thought perhaps someone programmed it, but my daughter is the only one to understand how to program things and she hasn’t been home for 3 weeks. ( I could, if it interested me. But I only watch the History Channel, TCM, IFC, and Hallmark, so there’s no point in even checking the schedule, let alone programming) and we don’t have a recording device attached to this television.

It might have been the aliens.
They want to make sure that you will be a good mate when they take you away : )

@fireside, LOL. That’s probably true. I’m having an “Instant Karma” kind of month. Beam me up, Scotty!

Yes, by almost every mouse click or by hitting the return button. NSA keeps watching everyone. But you need to set off a trigger. So if you avoid certain keywords… you should be fine.

RandomMrdan's avatar

keywords like….bomb, threat, president, airplane, bomb, bomb, iraq, kill, terrorist…words like that?

-ah crap.

@RandomMrdan – They’re closing in on ya… run…
