What can I do about my dogs farting?

Asked by buster (10274points) February 13th, 2009

My year and a half old golden retriever Ember has the stinkiest farts. She stays outside I usually let her in the house at night. Toto my indoor chihuahua is notorious for letting them slip too but they don’t reek as bad. I have three other outdoor dogs and I let them indoors if its cold but they don’t seem to fart and stink like Ember and Toto. They always eat the same diet. I try and refrain from feeding them table scraps. Help me I like Embers company but Im dying from noxious gases. Any ideas Jellies?

If you figure it out, let me know. Huckleberry, my lab drops room clearing bombs every now and then. His brother Finn eats exactly the same food and has no gas at all.

Whatever you do, do not stand behind her with a lighter!

Can you give a dog Beano?

Put a clothespin on your nose? :-)

How about this for the dog’s behind?

If you hear either one of my dogs let out a long, sighing, half-asleep groan…run!

no idea how to stop it. must be inevitable like the tide or Jeff Dunham being not funny.

Change to a dog food with less grain and a much higher protein content.

If you are willing, read about “the BARF”: diet. Since switching my dogs to raw food, they fart very infrequently.

Dog food is construct of the pet food industry.

If you are not ready to go raw, you can still consider a higher quality food such as EVO.

Buy a can of air freshener

We have two dogs with this problem. I just teach then to lie with their butts facing anyone but me, and I keep the fan on.

Our dog belches a lot, and hence, doesn’t fart much. She also belches through her Kong ball, which gives it a nice megaphone effect. Damn dogs are smart.

A little chopped mint in his meal?

I realized years after my dog became a completely outside dog, that the dog food he was eating was mostly beans. I hadn’t known. And I felt really bad about it. It didn’t look like beans—it was just dog food. There has to be a better dog food that is low on beans and high on whatever else is good for them but not fart inducing.

the real million dollar question is, how do you make your dog’s farts smell good?

Cut back on the burritos and beer. The dog too. ( :

@Bluefreedom Then they would have a projectile problem!

Kiev749's avatar

Somehow… attach a glade air freshener to the behind or the tail of the dog.. then take a picture and post it for all of us.

Bluefreedom's avatar

@Kiev749. Oh man, good point. I never even thought of that. :o)

Can you stop the sun from rising?

Can you stop the ocean?

YOU CAN’T STOP A DOG FROM FARTING!

(At least in my experience.)

You don’t mention what kind of food you feed, but try switching to a high quality brand (diet changes should be gradual, not abrupt). Finding the right food will help more than anything.

You can give beano to dogs, but you have to remember to give it before meals.

Treats, especially rawhide, also causes gas.

You probably won’t be able to completely eliminate farts altogether, but you can certainly reduce them.

@syz Without being a spokesperson, what high quality brands do you recommend?

Here are a few to research. (in no particular order)
Taste of the Wild
Evanger
Solid Gold
Life’ Abundance
Merrick
Natures Variety

There’s a very nice explanation of what to look for here. The fillers mentioned are probably going to be the main culprit in gaseous byproducts.

Science Diet, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, ProPlan….

My dog gets farty when we feed her something different. Don’t give her any table scraps and whatever you feed her be consistant. It is hard on their system when you change. Dogs really don’t need variety like people do.

I can’t stop my dog from farting, but I have trained her to leave the room to do it.
